Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashton Price. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ashton , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
This was a long time ago when music people weren’t using the internet much to promote themselves. I say this because when I first moved to Hamilton Ontario to get started I was going to music stores to put up posters on bulletin boards. When I was at one music store I noticed a hip hop crew was doing everything BUT recording music. They were making beats, helping with lyrics etc. but it didn’t seem like they had a studio to record at. I reached out to them to see if they wanted to start running their people through my studio and they agreed and that they did. That led to a lot of other opportunities and I still work with some of those guys 25 years later.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into music when I was a teenager and quickly decided I wanted to make it my job. I went to school for music production and then moved to Hamilton Ontario to start my business, Morph Productions, because it had a great music scene and (at the time) was a cheap place to live. I think I differentiate myself from a lot of others because I’m a writer and have a keen ear for pop melodies/lyrics. I also have a quirky side as well which I like to come out in the music whenever possible. You always want to give the listener something familiar but if you can do that and throw in a few new things that’s where I think magic is made.
I’ve done a lot of stuff in my career so I have a lot of knowledge about all aspects of music but I’m also relatively accessible too so I feel like I’ve been a good resource for my clients, both for their music and their careers.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
I have a lot of supplementary revenue streams within my business. I feel unless you’ve “hit it big” you really need to be versatile. To that end I can work successfully in a lot of different music genres. I can also do a lot of things within those genres whether it be, writing, recording, producing as well as mixing and mastering. I’m actually trying to focus more on mixing now because it fits where I’m at right now.
In addition I also do corporate voice overs and audio books. I always find that when one thing dies down for a bit, another one of these things picks up to keep me going.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think my reputation was helped because I always try to treat people with honesty and respect. I also try to treat the artists that are just starting out equally well to the ones that are a little further in their career. That and doing good work for the last 25 years has really helped build up my name.
