We were lucky to catch up with Ashlyn Edith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ashlyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
The wildest thing that has ever happened to me as a business owner is COVID because I lost my main source of income which was my JOB , I’ve tried working from home and my job was garnishing at that time they paused garnishing so I was out of a job . So I was always in a family group chat and my siblings would send me Tiktoks I’d always go to the web version to look at the links and I was very tired of doing that long story short I downloaded the app . Immediately HOOKED ! So it was dope and I saw how many people were using this app to promote their business very creative ways and I played around on it came up with unique techniques and I did that for at least 2-3 months got maybe 100k followers within that time frame so I still don’t have a job lmfao I solely just based my life on cracking the code to becoming either a full time entrepreneur or just jobless . Long story short I took my promotion to the NEXT LEVEL I created a story where people were literally begging for a part two I think at that moment it had maybe 30k views still NO sales I’ve incorporated all of my products in the videos, mentioned what they’re for the whole nine so I just got off tiktok and went on with my life . The NEXT DAY I woke up maybe 5000 comments , thousands of followers and almost 10k in my sales on my website I called my boyfriend screaming because it was like dream it was a beautiful thing to see , to experience because I was jobless with a $1600 apartment I had atleast 4 months worth of rent but what’s next ? It was literally a dream til this day I can’t believe it happened . This had gone on for weeks everyday my video would grow I ended up with over 3 million views and I made over 10k in 1 week ! Here’s the downside I was always In stock but I’ve never had over 100 orders before and I’ve never had to experience how will I pack this much . I had NO help , my friends stood me up , some of my friends we aren’t even friends anymore because of this , I had to pack over 500 orders by myself that’s factory warehouse jobs at this point . So I’m calling people even put out an ad on Facebook to hire people , I got about 100 orders out within almost a week still not enough I had to order more boxes so that delayed a lot of my time . Customers got impatient they didn’t understand that I was one person that unexpectedly went viral . So I would say it was a good thing but also very bad when you’re unprepared and that’s the story lol
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well of course I’m Ashlyn Edith, I’ve been into the beauty/cosmetics industry for over 4years now. It started off as just lip scrubs, lipgloss, body butter I grew with time . I didn’t know what the heck I was doing . I’ve always been into beauty since a child so originally I thought it was the right thing to do. I didn’t really take it serious at first because I wasn’t confident enough in my business no one supported me and looking back I wouldn’t of either sad to say but it took a lot of work to get where I am . I started with skincare after I got my license as an esthetician and started making skincare Products but the products I was making were mediocre everyone was selling it , not only that people were better than I was at the moment . I leveled up started getting better at my craft which was designing, labeling , just overall a better look, I started to incorporate hygiene products and that’s when my sales really started booming , when my page and website was getting noticed yes we have feminine care out here but not a lot and a lot of them are harmful so I officially cracked the code to exactly what I enjoy doing sometimes the things you love to do the most is not what you’ll end up doing it’s life . What sets me apart from a lot of business owners is my dedication, my ambition, my go get it mind set, through it all I’ve never paid an Instagram influencer to promote, I’ve never asked any one to do anything for me it’s nothing wrong with that but it’s get rich quick money your brand is a Buzz after that Buzz you’re sober again meaning new influencer to pay which doesn’t look authentic. so I paved the way for me always to be successful where customers can trust my products without a celebrity or influencer to say so . I’m most proud of not giving up and staying 100% me, I plan to make it in big corporations and give back to the community especially women because til this day we’re fighting for our rights .
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Well I never really had money lying around to just use unfortunately I worked two jobs and at the time I just paid rent and bills and I spent on what I needed and I started funding my business every check rather it’s containers , packaging just something. Once I got to where I can literally run the business I started taking risk stopped going to the nail salon, stopped buying things I really didn’t need because to me it’s like if you can buy this for yourself, you could’ve used this for your business once you get that mindset you’ll break that horrible spending feeling because your business is your baby and your baby always comes first . That’s how you should treat your business .
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’ve built my audience by being me , sounds better said than done but I’ve always had a following on Instagram, a lot of celebrities followed me I knew a lot of them so it was so hard transitioning from kinda being known to a nobody on tiktok so I had to build my audience most of my videos were me talking lol my voice is very shockingly unique so I do believe a lot of my followers followed just because of my voice , my social media was always very open no aesthetic no niche I literally would just be normal & now everyone wants to be like someone or have this certain look but it’s all about being yourself because they’re people that are normal just like you and want to see people that are like them, no fancy aesthetic, touch screen toasters and I feel like at that time people just loved how simple and fun my content was , I went from 0 followers to over 200k in a few months & my advice to everyone is be yourself take social media serious it can take you places that you couldn’t even imagine .
