We recently connected with Ashley Woodcock and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ashley thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
When I married my husband I obviously never dreamed that our fairytale romance would end in a separation, especially after giving birth to our beautiful daughter and miracle baby. Yet here I was, a new business owner, a new mom, and now finding myself single at an age where society makes it seem scary to be on your own and starting over. I opened my own brick and mortar boutique which unfortunately I had to close at the end of last year due to financial constraints, however, I wanted the mission of my store to live on. My podcast, She’s a good girl, is my way of keeping the mission alive by sharing intimate stories, talking about difficult subjects and facing truths head on so that no one in this world feels alone – at least in spirit. This is not something I have been able to monetize, but it’s become a life mission. The hardest part was being ok with putting myself out there, facing judgement and negative criticism and letting all my walls down. If I can relate to or help even one person a day, it’s beyond worth it to be heard. For many years I felt silenced, but sometimes it takes having your voice being stripped from you before you can truly be heard.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My brand is American June which is comprised of 3 three things:
(1) New clothing for sale, hand selected and curated by myself: I’m currently attending pop-ups around Austin and have a private showroom open to anyone who wants to come by and visit. The best way to see where I’m headed next with my clothing and accessories or make a showroom appointment is on IG @shopamericanjune
(2) She’s a good girl podcast: Hosted by Barbie Quinn, the podcast is a series of real conversations without barriers, as we level our way through discriminations that we won’t allow to define us. With a mission to bring education, awareness and an actual voice to hard topics that hit sex, dating, mental health, self love and diversification. Though most of our listeners find us on Spotify, head to our website for all the ways to listen and to check out our fun merch! Also say hello on IG – we love to hear from you and to know what you want to hear Barbie talk about!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
BE YOURSELF.
Of course not everyone is going to be 100% themself 100% of the time, we all have our good days and bad days, but maintaining authenticity is critical. People like comfort, to know what they’re going to get when they come to you and if anything be pleasantly surprised along the way. They don’t want to feel “sold” or “tricked”. I told every customer that walked through the door that the piece that would look best on the is the one that they feel most comfortable in – whether that’s in my store or not. It’s not always about making the sale, it’s about making the human connection.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was forced to close my brick and mortar retail location, I knew that I wanted to continue podcasting but wanted to put even more of my attention into hosting. I have fallen in love with podcasting, speaking out, allowing others to join my show and providing a platform that could really touch people and even change lives. I’m loud, I’m proud, I’m different, I break the mold, and so do most of my listeners. If there is something that you are truly passionate about, you will become good at it because your heart is in it. When I’m recording, I don’t care if I stumble over my word once in awhile or go on a tangent, as long as I’m being loyal to my good girls (followers) and staying true to myself and the mission. I will continue to work as hard I as can to grow the She’s a good girl audience and find even bigger platforms to use my hosting abilities, and who knows…maybe a reality show in the works!
