We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashley Watkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I wanted to pursue something in the creative field since I was a child. I was born with the skill to draw and always knew that I wanted to do something with it. At first, I wanted to work for Disney since that was one of my biggest inspirations growing up. As I got older, I wanted to work in the gaming industry since I became a fan of the art department for certain games that I would play.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
By the time I was a senior in high school, I had nothing but art classes to hone my skills. And pursued a school for graphic design. By that time, I graduated college with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design I started working with a food company as their in-house graphic designer. And then opened up a small business in 2020 to create work for other local small businesses. My business I create marketing material for small businesses like flyers, business cards, logos etc.
What puts me aside from other business is that I tried to work with my clients. Most of my clients have been returning back to me because of my skill and work ethics. Which leads them to telling others about my services. What I am most proud is that I have people that believe in me and are willing to give me opportunities to work with them.
What I want most people to know about me is that I am a business that is willing to work with you and be honest about it. I also tried to promote my clients on my social media if they give me the permission to do so.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal that is driving me in my creative journey is to be a known artist. I want people to recognize my work, whether it be my style of drawing or the way I can create marketing for people and that they know it was me that did it.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew that when buying inventory not to buy too much and that less is more. Also, that I don’t have to stick with the same manufacturers and that I can shop around.
