We recently connected with Ashley Walburn and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley , appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Yes! I’ve had a few defining moments that led me to where I am at hOMe holistic today. The first one was I was sitting on my back deck, talking to a friend on the phone. I’ve been staying home a few years with my children and ready to get back to work I thought I would go back to work full-time as a marriage and family therapist. The career that I had left when my babies were so small. I’ve been practicing yoga for several years at that point and at the time there was no prenatal yoga at all in Kansas City and my friend said to me he want to become a prenatal yoga teacher. He would be so good at supporting mothers and then that moment I felt like it’s some thing I had to do like a calling . Later that week I was at my regular yoga class talking to my close friend who is also my yoga teacher and she said the same thing you had to become a prenatal yoga teacher she was opening her own yoga studio soon and said “you will work for me! “And I knew that I would be supported, and frankly make my investment back if I had a place to land… Prenatal yoga, grew and grew, I became a childbirth educator, and my childbirth course grew every month and about eight years later, I’ve been thinking about starting a yoga studio and a holistic center that was all about moms. It felt like we grown to that point, but I was terrified, and I was putting the brakes on in so many ways. my meditation teacher said to me you’re the only one that can do this. This is your dream no one else’s. And then I went to see an Energy Healer and he said to me you’re the only one putting the brakes on the universe is bending for this to happen for you, Ashley the community needs this and I knew that I had to keep moving forward and I was so scared and I had no idea how to run a business but I knew how to be a yoga teacher and I knew how to be a Doula and I learned so much along the way from my mentors . It’s been such a gift at hOMe holistic to watch the support for mothers in our community increase, and the women who work here, supporting, mothers, and all the different ways that we do.
Ashley , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m so proud to own hOMe holistic. I am so honored I was encouraged and supported in KC. I often feel like hOMe holistic is here for all mothers, and I just happen to be the landlord… It’s really not my business. It’s the business that supports mothers in our community, a safe place for them to prepare their bodies for birth, a safe place to find Doula’s that will help them feel safe in their birth. And to be supported in so many ways on their postpartum journey, as we raise our children. At hOMe holistic we offer prenatal yoga, Mommy Baby Yoga, parent, taught, gentle, yoga, and so much more… We also offer birth and postpartum Doula services, and our Doula team consists of four amazing experienced Doula’s with the highest level of training and experience that I am so excited and honored to be a part of. We offer a massage therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, pelvic floor, physical therapy, midwifery services, counseling, lactation, support, and Cranial Sacral therapy everything supporting mothers, and their families. What’s different about hOMe holistic from other prenatal yoga classes is that were birth Doula’s and also Yoga Teacher’s were childbirth educators, and also yoga teachers, and so every single class we are helping to prepare mothers bodies and nervous systems for Birth. We honor their birth choices and help them find the best team for what is important for them and what they feel is best for their baby. We are so lucky to be located in old Overland Park near the farmers market. It’s such a sweet community so often after class moms walk together to get coffee or lunch and stay friends from the group of moms that they met in yoga class that’s probably one of the things that I’m the most proud of and love to see happening. My business model is “what do I wish I would’ve had.” When I was having my children… That we provide amazing support and education and preparation in a way that I swear I didn’t even know it was possible when I was having my kids love it so much and I’m honored to be not only a part of hOMe holistic but to be the creator of it! it’s such a blast.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I get this question all the time! What help me get here and so much of it is step-by-step minute by minute, showing up being honest and creating relationships in the community with other people who are working with mothers hustling I did a lot of stuff for free For a lot of years I went to everything I taught yoga classes and doctors offices and chiropractic offices and literally in hallways. Sometimes I teach a class in Olathe and then downtown and then in somebody’s house for a private being a birth Doula helped… That I would be at a Birth and my moms we’re always so prepared for lower intervention births and were informed and those are things that we work on in every single yoga class and every single at birth Doula meeting and the midwives and OB/GYN‘s noticed, and they started sending me referrals. It’s such an honor to receive a referral from anyone in the community and I look back on the last 16 years of doing this work full-time and I remember when nobody came to class and nobody knew who I was and now they do and it’s because of a work ethic , that includes honesty and compassion and an honoring of mothers and their unique journey, becoming mothers and raising children.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Of course March 2020 we had to pivot and we turned all of our classes online and just a few hours. I’ve been teaching classes online and doing some therapy over zoom so I was familiar with the platform and it was easy for us to go from in person to virtual I did it so fast and the community was so grateful. I’m grateful for that time and all that I learned.
