We recently connected with Ashley Wade and have shared our conversation below.

Ashley, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

I was doing graphic design for a friend of mines company, and some of my designs she didn’t always use. So I thought “why not start my own brand?” And use the designs I like and want to share. It gave me a creative outlet and a way to give myself some extra income.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

FilthyGearHeads is an automotive brand, our clothing and designs are with car enthusiasts in mind. I’ve been in the industry since birth, my family have been mechanics and I’ve been a service advisor for the past 7-8 years. I always felt any clothing directed at the automotive world was tacky and quite frankly, cut and paste. I also put a lot of effort and thought into the clothing itself not just the designs. My clientele works on their own cars or they’re in the industry and I want stuff they like and that actually hold up to the abuse this industry inflicts.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

The thing that helped the most was putting a face to the brand. Being active on social media, wearing the merchandise out to car meets and car shows. Adding in that my clientele recommends my brand, without flinching when they hear “where did you get that?” They don’t hesitate to say where and how to get your own.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

Funding my business has been difficult. I didn’t take loans, I didn’t borrow money. I’ve used my paychecks and budgeted in the best I could. I’ve gotten to a point now where the business almost finds itself but I have to pick up some left over here and there.
