We were lucky to catch up with Ashley Tufte recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
I often hear from clients is that I am easy to talk to, and that I take the time to answer all their questions. From what my clients have said, not a lot of others in the industry are willing to take time to talk and some are even rude. I get a lot of inquiries, so it does take a lot of time but as I tell people, this is my passion and my job. I enjoy visiting with people and establishing a personal relationship with them. Meeting different people from all over with different backgrounds is part of being a dog breeder that I truly enjoy. I would much rather have someone reach out and ask questions to see if one of my dogs is going to be a good fit for them than not ask questions and figure out down the road it’s not the dog for them. Our goal is to have a successful placing for the owner and the dog! Everyone benefits from taking the time to get to know the potential owner and answer any questions or concerns that they may have.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We breed European Dobermanns. We started breeding about 5 years ago and got our first Dobermann in 2015. We started with Americans since I had never owned one prior to that, I wasn’t even aware that there were different types. We did not have intentions of starting a breeding program when we got our first Dobermann, but we fell in love with the breed and sadly we never saw any around or really heard of many breeders in our area. They are such smart and regal dog and have a great bond with our kids and we thought there should be more around. I started researching and learning more about them as well as the breeding process and we go our first European Dobermann in 2020. We loved the look and temperament of the Euros, and continued to add more to our program, eventually not having any Americans. We live on 4 acres and let our dogs out to run and roam around like a dog is supposed to! Our kids play with them, we take them for walks, they are part of our family. Our puppies are socialized with all the older dogs and our kids as well! I was raised on a farm with animals, so it comes natural to me to have and care for animals and enjoy their companionship. We offer lifetime support of our dogs/puppies and love seeing photos of our babies grown up! We will also take any pup/dog back in the event that the owner is unable to care for them. We do not want our dogs to ever end up unloved, dumped or in a shelter. We also work with a trainer to help clients with their dogs and puppies. Dobermanns are high energy dogs and often require a lot of attention and training as a puppy. We know this can be challenging and have a professional trainer we work with and refer to clients needing help. Our trainer has worked with many of our dogs and puppies., so he has a lot of experience with the breed and temperament of our dogs. We are a small family run business and are passionate about our dogs and their success!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We are very honest and transparent with our clients about our dogs/puppies. We do not want anyone to have any surprises when they get their dog/puppy and again, want the pairing to be a success. I believe that our clients see that and experience it when they have gotten a puppy from us, and often recommend us to others they know or see online that are looking for a Dobermann puppy as well. We get a lot of clients from seeing one of our puppies out and about with their owners. We strive to produce the good temperaments and healthy, beautiful dogs. I believe when people see our dogs whether in person or pics/videos that can be seen, and people know the kind of dogs we are producing.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
We started very small and slow. We bought our first dog and saved for a male. There was no help with funding from anyone or loans that went into the start of our business. We saved, worked hard and when we had a litter of puppies, we put money back into the dogs and business by buying another dog or whatever we needed to continue to grow and improve our program. For the first several years I worked a job during the day and came home to clean kennels and care for dogs and kids at night. I believe our genuine love and care for the dogs and our clients has allowed us to keep growing our business.
