We were lucky to catch up with Ashley St John recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
The most unexpected problem that I had at the very beginning of my business was the anxiety that came from posting my work publicly. I had a hard time sharing my work on social media because I was so scared that people would not like it. I would almost be in tears when I shared it and often I would delete it immediately if it didn’t get any likes or shares. Ironically, it was the overwhelming amount of support and people who liked my work that made me get over that. Now, I can’t wait to share my work with the world. Although I am still a perfectionist who pays attention to every painstaking detail, I guess it’s safe to say that my anxiety has been replaced with OCD.
Ashley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into balloons by accident. My business was initially offering party rentals only, I used my 35th birthday as a way to showcase my items and to test myself as a decorator. At that point I had customers inquiring, but I was scared to take on a party with no experience, so I did my own. Balloons were something that I wanted but it was out of my budget so I ordered some and created my first garland. It was nothing near my current work, but it ignited a new passion and I dedicated the next year to perfecting my craft. I am most proud of myself because I am 100% self-taught. I didn’t only learn balloons, I taught myself graphic design so I could offer a unique custom experience. I also make backdrops and other custom items for parties. Every single design or theme that I produce is original. I want people who follow me to know that the best part of my business is being a part of the most important milestones of other people’s lives. I get to be a part of the most beautiful memories, and I have met some incredible people along the way.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The most monumental pivot of my business was when I realized that talent would only take me so far. What I mean by that is my work would only be a side hustle if I didn’t learn business skills. I will be the first to admit that I had no clue about being an entrepreneur. I knew I wanted flexibility and when I discovered my passion for balloons I wanted to share it with the world. I had yet to learn how to price my services or how to run an actual business. I decided to enroll in college for business administration, and now I understand so much more about managing a business than before. It also boosted my confidence as a businesswoman. There is a whole science to business that I knew nothing about prior to college. I was a high school dropout who hadn’t been to school in 20 years before I ventured into business for myself.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It’s ALWAYS the before and after. I see potential in things that others do not. Nothing is more satisfying than taking someone’s idea and turning it into reality for them. Sometimes, I even surprise myself with the results, which is a fantastic feeling. I am so blessed to have clients who trust my creativity, they usually give me the freedom to do what I want with their ideas. The fact that people trust me with their special days the way that they do is a reward in itself.
