We were lucky to catch up with Ashley Sherrell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
My hero is my grandmother, as I grew up I began to admire the way she gracefully handled any situation. The biggest lesson I’ve learned from her is having faith, and that believing in yourself can take you as far as you want to go. My grandmother instilled in me that “I can do anything that I put my mind to”. Any obstacle you face should be handled with grace, not panicked. She’s a huge influence on my career today. Deciding to be an entrepreneur isn’t an easy choice. There are lessons to learn and obstacles to go through. Most decide to quit when things get too hard, but thankfully she taught me that I can do anything. Every step of the way I understand things will happen, but how I handle them says a lot about who I am.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Ashley Sherrell, a personal trainer and coach. I began working on my craft years ago. It all began as a child. I was obsessed with how I looked. I wanted to be fit like Denise Austin. I watched all her workout videos from Pilates to Summer Beach workouts. I would stay up all night so I wouldn’t miss her coming on tv at 6 am. Fast forward many years later I started working at La fitness, this really got me excited I knew my future was going to be in fitness forever. I moved to Houston and began working at 24 hour Fitness. I had a dream one night that i opened my own gym, and was the top trainer in America. The next day I quit, because I knew i could do anything that I put my mind to. Fast forward even more, now I am running my own Personal training business. I have my own meal prep company, as well as athletic leisure line. I’ve come so far & i’m very blessed to grow each year in this industry. I’m still in a space where i learn something new each day, which means I’m doing something right because can always work at perfecting your craft.
I believe for my clients i provide more than just being their trainer, I am their safe place. I am where they can let go of their own problems, whatever it is they’re facing and simply be free. They become confident inside and out. It’s more than just money for me in this industry. When you’re money hungry you can’t focus on helping the actual client change their lives. Changing lives daily is my ultimate goal and that’s what sets me apart.
I am most proud of my clients to be honest. I preach all day to show up for yourself, and that’s exactly what they’re doing.
The main thing i want people to know about me is that I genuinely love what i do. I am walking in my purpose and helping others achieve their goals is major to me.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe remaining who i am has helped me with my reputation. I haven’t attempted to be like anyone but me. I am always upfront and honest with my clients so there are no secrets, nor hidden agendas. With me what you see is what you get. I never make false promises, & that’s very common in this industry. We set realistic goals, and when we need to adjust goals based on that client i am upfront and honest as to why. I earn my clients trust.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
As I stated earlier I am very blessed in this industry, for me word of mouth has been extremely successful. Your clients can speak for you, they are the ones dealing with me each week. One friend, or stranger sees a client of mine and will ask “Who trains you” and they’re more than happy to tell them about me. I think that’s one of the most important strategies. Secondly social media (instagram, facebook, youtube) the average person googles “leg day workout, or full body workout” when you properly advertise yourself meaning using the hashtags, consistently posting, people will find you. Engaging with others in your community, people will get to know you.
