We were lucky to catch up with Ashley Scarboro recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The mission behind creating Modern Stitches is simple- Fashion inclusivity! This brand was derived from a necessary space for black voices and enthusiasts of fashion who represent its classic, eccentric, and timeless style. It is now and always been a publication that saves space for cultural growth of fashion throughout the decades while being a teachable step stool for diverse fashion writers on their journey. Modern Stitches is proud to deliver the fashion news to those that crave a space to explore vintage and luxury streetwear through the lens of diverse voices and personal expression.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Ashley Scarboro, Founder and Publisher of Modern Stitches Magazine. We are a digital publication that lives on ModernStitchesmag.com.
At Modern Stitches, we embark on a captivating mission to marry the nostalgia of vintage-inspired fashion with the edgy allure of modern luxury runway streetwear trends. Our vision is to curate a vibrant space that celebrates style evolution, seamlessly blending the charm of bygone eras with the dynamic energy of contemporary street style. More than a showcase, we are dedicated to amplifying unsung Black voices, ensuring our platform becomes a canvas where diverse stories, perspectives, and talents flourish.
A little about me- I am a Washington, DC native now residing in the NY/NJ tristate area. With an undergraduate degree from Virginia State University in Sociology and Masters from Rosemont College in Bryn Mawr, PA I have proudly navigated the fashion world by publishing a very niche magazine catering to the culture. Growing up I initially wanted to become a doctor, specifically a Pediatrician helping children. Somewhere along the way I became fascinated with fashion, individualism, and self expression through clothing and over the years, through styling celebs, interviews, and highlight others journeys, I believe I’ve still found my “help” story. My contribution to society in a way.
For the past 13 years, Modern Stitches has truly made our mark on the fashion industry through several television news appearances, two printed covers, panel discussions, and even brand merchandise. In the earlier days where thrift, classic, vintage, or timeless fashion was considered taboo, it was our mission to denounce the stigma. Over the years we have become a staple for affordable fashion and luxury all under one roof and for that I am proud.
As we continue to navigate the fashion world, we continue to be more than just a fashion magazine; with a deep-rooted love for fashion history and modern trends. As a brand, we continue to push the culture forward, bridging the gap between vintage inspiration and modern luxury streetwear.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Modern Stitches consistently hires and re-hires a mix of journalism students looking for professional editorial experience and seasoned writers. This gives me an opportunity to not only mentor students who are seeking industry experience while maintaining a strong editorial presence on our site. As far as managing a team, I typically speak to everyone’s strong points when assigning articles and truly listen to their story ideas. If it makes sense for our readers and the voice of the magazine, I’m all for it.
It takes a compassionate manager to navigate many personalities, and being flexible, yet concise on deadlines and professionalism keeps my editors on track. I’ve even had previous editors who have moved on to new roles reach out to re-join the team because they believe in the mission, my inclusive management style, and experience with the brand.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I would always say “Be prepared to pivot.” I had to unlearn perfectionism.
In the early days of Modern Stitches, I had a totally different mindset. (This was 20213-ish) I had the perfect plan that I would do it all myself, publish several print copies, and maintain everything on my own. This lead to burn out quickly! I even took breaks here and there to catch my breath, but I soon realized that delegation is the key and I had to outsource. I am only one person and now I have editors, social media management, photographers etc. It takes a team to be successful and it’s okay not to have your hands on everything.
