We recently connected with Ashley Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
One of the best investments I’ve made as a photographer was in a high-quality lens over upgrading my camera body. Here’s the backstory:
When I first started, I was eager to upgrade my camera body every time a new model came out. I thought better specs would make me a better photographer. I was using a mid-range DSLR and started noticing some limitations in low light and sharpness. So, naturally, I began saving for the latest camera body on the market.
But then a mentor advised me to shift my focus to lenses instead. They explained that a great lens can unlock the full potential of your current camera body and that investing in glass—like a fast prime or versatile zoom—would have a longer-term impact on my work.
So, I took the leap and bought a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, which cost more than my camera body at the time. It felt risky—why spend so much on one lens when I could get a newer camera? But once I started using it, the difference was night and day. The sharpness, bokeh, and performance in low light completely transformed.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a family and lifestyle photographer who specializes in capturing the authentic, everyday moments that make life beautiful. My journey into photography began when my own children were babies. Like so many parents, I wanted to preserve every fleeting moment—the tiny toes, the messy first birthday cake smashes, the pure joy of a spontaneous laugh. But I quickly realized that the typical posed family portraits didn’t tell the full story of our lives. I wanted something more genuine, more real. So, I picked up a camera and started learning everything I could about how to capture those raw, in-between moments.
What started as a personal project to document my own family’s life grew into a passion for helping others tell their stories. Over time, what began as casual photos for friends turned into a full-fledged business as families started reaching out, asking me to capture their milestones in the same heartfelt way.
What I Offer
I specialize in family, maternity, and newborn photography, with a focus on lifestyle sessions. Instead of stiff poses and forced smiles, my sessions are designed to feel relaxed and natural. Whether we’re in your home or exploring a favorite outdoor spot, my goal is to create a space where your family can just be yourselves.
My work is all about the connections and emotions that make your family unique. I document the big milestones—like welcoming a new baby or celebrating an anniversary
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building my reputation as a photographer has been a combination of delivering consistent, high-quality work, cultivating genuine relationships with my clients, and using tools like reviews and social media strategically. Here’s what helped me the most:
1. Client Experience and Word of Mouth
At the core of my business is an exceptional client experience. From the first inquiry to the delivery of the final gallery, I strive to make every interaction positive, professional, and personal. I listen to what my clients want, help them feel at ease during the session, and deliver photos that not only meet but exceed their expectations.
Happy clients naturally become my biggest advocates. Many of my bookings come from word-of-mouth referrals because families who love their photos are excited to share their experience with friends and family.
2. Google Reviews and Testimonials
Encouraging my clients to leave reviews on Google has been a game-changer. I always follow up with a thank-you note and a request for feedback after delivering their gallery. Reviews not only build credibility for potential clients researching photographers, but they also boost visibility in local search results.
Having authentic testimonials on my website and social media has also been crucial.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Fostering strong relationships with my clients and building brand loyalty is at the heart of my business as a lifestyle and family photographer. Here’s how I keep in touch and create lasting connections:
1. Personalized Communication
I aim to make every client feel valued and appreciated from the start. After a session, I send a personalized thank-you email or handwritten note, expressing my gratitude for trusting me to capture their family’s moments.
When delivering their gallery, I include thoughtful details, such as tips on how to display their photos or a recommendation for the best print options. This extra care leaves a lasting impression and encourages them to come back.
2. Email Newsletters
I maintain a regular email newsletter to stay in touch with past clients. It’s not just about promoting services—I share helpful tips (like outfit inspiration for family photos), seasonal updates, or ideas for preserving their memories, like creating holiday cards or photo albums.
I also announce special events, like mini sessions or discounts, through the newsletter, giving loyal clients early access as a thank-you for their continued support.
3. Social Media Engagement
Social media is a great tool for staying connected with clients in a more casual, everyday way. I post sneak peeks from sessions, behind-the-scenes content, and personal stories about my own family to create a sense of community.
I make an effort to engage with my clients by liking and commenting on their posts, celebrating milestones like birthdays, or simply wishing them well. It keeps the relationship alive long after their session is over.
4. Loyalty Rewards
I offer a loyalty program where returning clients receive perks, such as discounts on future sessions or complimentary prints when they book multiple sessions. For example, families who book a newborn session often return for milestone or family sessions, and I reward their loyalty with special pricing or priority booking.
5. Holiday Cards and Seasonal Greetings
Sending a personalized holiday card or seasonal greeting to past clients is a meaningful way to stay in touch. It’s not about advertising but simply reminding them of our connection and showing gratitude for their support.
6. Anniversary Reminders
I keep track of key milestones, such as the anniversary of their wedding, a child’s first birthday, or the date of their last session. I send a quick message to congratulate them and gently remind them it might be time to update their family photos.
7. Client Spotlights and Features
With permission, I sometimes feature clients on my blog or social media, sharing the story behind their session. It makes them feel special and connected to my brand while also inspiring potential clients.
8. Community and Events
I host events like annual mini sessions, styled shoots, or even workshops where clients can come together and feel part of a broader community. These events are fun, low-pressure ways to reconnect with past clients and meet new ones.
9. Consistency in Quality and Care
Ultimately, the best way to foster brand loyalty is to consistently deliver high-quality work and an excellent experience. Clients who feel seen, appreciated, and cared for are far more likely to return and recommend my services to others.
By combining these efforts, I aim to go beyond being just a photographer—I strive to be a trusted partner in documenting the stories and milestones that matter most to my clients.
