We recently connected with Ashley Rader and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Being a full-time artist has been an incredibly fulfilling experience for me! Painting is something I would always find time for, and I am grateful that I can devote all my time and energy to it now. Although being a full-time artist comes with its own set of challenges, I have learned to navigate them with confidence. As a one-person business, I am responsible for every aspect of my art business, from creating to marketing and customer service. While it can be overwhelming at times, I have found that it has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. I have learned to rely on myself and my own instincts which been a journey of self-discovery and growth. My previous job experiences have been invaluable in helping me establish my own art business. The skills I learned have been instrumental in promoting my work and building relationships with collectors. I also learned how to manage my finances, which has been crucial in running my own business. The pay may not be consistent, but the rewards are immeasurable. Being able to pursue my passion every day is a dream come true, and I cannot imagine going back to a regular job.
Ashley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always wanted to become full-time artist, although I believed that it was an unattainable dream. My time in art school was difficult and I struggled to find my niche. After I graduated from college, I opted to embrace the corporate world and brushed art aside as a hobby. I eventually fell away from art altogether and put all of my energy towards work. For several years, I honed my skills as a graphic designer and marketing coordinator. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, my professional life took a turn as furloughs and reduced work hours created financial instability. I needed to supplement my income so I made the decision to rekindle my passion for painting and began to define my artistic niche. My aspiration was to cultivate a brand characterized by simplicity, distinctiveness, and marketability. Drawing inspiration from my profound love for animals, I resolved to focus on the realm of wildlife art, commencing with the depiction of one of my favorite animals, a lion. My artistic style embraces meticulous attention to detail and they are quite contemporary. My choice of monochromatic palettes directs attention to the intricacies, and the uncluttered composition amplifies the subject’s essence. In all my creative endeavors, I strive to evoke a profound connection with each painting, nurturing a deep-seated appreciation for the beauty of wildlife.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
While I firmly believe in the importance of making art accessible to all, I must admit that the concept of NFTs, in my view, lacks the ethical foundations I hold dear. The transformation of digital JPEGs into art, to me, diminishes the intrinsic magic and value associated with traditional art. Art has historically carried a unique power to evoke emotions, convey narratives, and inspire, and I fear that NFTs may dilute this profound connection by reducing it to mere digital tokens. While technological innovation can be transformative, I remain skeptical about the implications of commodifying art in this manner, as it appears to prioritize digital ownership over the rich, tangible experience that art has historically offered.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the incredible sense of fulfillment that comes from doing what you love and sharing your creations with the world. As an artist, you have a unique opportunity to channel your passion and creativity into your work, and that’s something truly special. Creating art is not just a job; it’s a way of life and a constant source of inspiration and joy. One of the most gratifying experiences is when people appreciate and love what I create. The feeling of knowing that your work resonates with others, evokes emotions, or inspires them is truly heartwarming. It motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of my creativity. Being an artist grants me the flexibility to spend time with my family whenever I want. This work-life balance is invaluable, as I can cherish precious moments with my loved ones without being tied to a rigid 9-to-5 schedule. I have the autonomy to shape my life and career according to my vision and goals. It’s empowering to be in control of my creative journey, making choices that align with my values and aspirations. Maintaining discipline as an artist is crucial, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between creative exploration and the demands of running a business. It’s not always easy, but it’s immensely satisfying to find that equilibrium, ensuring that my art remains both a passion and a profession.
