We recently connected with Ashley Pledger and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
Pledger of Hope is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals in need within our local communities. I officially established my 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Pledger of Hope, in 2022. However, I have been actively involved in serving the unhoused and less fortunate in my local communities since 2016. Despite not coming from a wealthy background, I have always made a conscious effort to give back to those who are less fortunate whenever possible.
Throughout the year, I strive to organize several significant events aimed at providing basic necessities such as food, water, clothing, blankets, outerwear, shoes, and hygiene products to those in need. Making a positive impact in my community and assisting those in need are priorities that I hold dear. It is truly a blessing to have the opportunity to give back, and I am committed to continuing this work through Pledger of Hope. My overarching goal is to demonstrate to individuals in our local communities that they are valued, loved, and cared for.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Ashley, and since childhood, I’ve harbored a deep desire to help others. Empathy has always been a guiding force in my life, and I vowed that if I ever attained wealth, I would dedicate myself to eradicating homelessness. While I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to assist others, I acknowledge that I have yet to reach that level of success.
My primary objective is to make a profoundly positive impact on my local communities. I aspire to extend aid to those in need and enhance their quality of life. Given the prevailing macroeconomic conditions affecting us all, the ability to offer support to those facing hardships is truly remarkable.
Engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds has been a privilege, and it reinforces the significance of the work we undertake at Pledger of Hope. Personally funding most of our events, I am continually grateful for the opportunity to interact with members of my community and witness the tangible impact of our efforts.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Starting a nonprofit is truly an uphill battle, one that demands unwavering dedication and resilience. It’s a journey filled with challenges, especially when you’re navigating it without external funding. Yet, every obstacle is met with determination to keep Pledger of Hope alive and thriving.
I pour my heart and soul into this cause, setting aside a portion of my hard-earned paycheck to keep the flame of hope burning bright. The sacrifices are real, but so is the sense of purpose that comes from knowing that every penny contributes to easing the burdens of those in need.
In my quest to make every dollar count, I’ve taken on the task of crafting Pledger of Hope’s merchandise myself. Each item lovingly made, each stitch a testament to the commitment to keep costs down and impact high. It’s a labor of love that extends beyond mere production—it’s a symbol of hope, directly reaching the hands of those who need it most in our community.
The sheer magnitude of planning events, rallying volunteers, and managing donations is a Herculean task. Yet, I am endlessly grateful for the support of dedicated volunteers who stand shoulder to shoulder with me during our most significant endeavors. Their presence is a reminder that we’re in this together, united in our mission to make a difference.
Through the exhaustion and the countless hours, it’s the fire within me—the unyielding passion for helping others—that fuels every step of this journey. It’s the stories of hope and resilience from those we serve that breathe life into our cause, reminding me why I embarked on this path in the first place. Each smile, each moment of gratitude, reaffirms that the struggles are worth it, and that together, we can truly make a difference in our community.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Learning that not everyone shares my passion and dedication has been a profound lesson on my journey with Pledger of Hope. Pouring my heart into serving my community, I’ve realized that this path isn’t meant for everyone, and that’s okay.
There have been moments when individuals offered to lend a hand but couldn’t follow through, or made promises they couldn’t keep. It’s been a journey of understanding and I make sure not to pressure others to join our cause. True volunteering stems from a genuine connection and desire to make a difference.
I’ve learned not to judge those who aren’t able or willing to offer their support. Everyone faces their own battles, carries their own burdens, and holds their own priorities close. Not everyone may have the emotional, mental, or physical capacity to engage with the struggles of the unhoused or less fortunate, and I respect that completely.
For those who do step forward to volunteer, I am deeply grateful. Their willingness to devote their time and energy to our cause is nothing short of inspiring. I ensure to express my gratitude in every way possible, recognizing that their contributions, regardless of size, leave an indelible mark on our community. Their presence and commitment remind me that together, we can create meaningful change and bring hope to those who need it most.
