We recently connected with Ashley Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
This is such a loaded question, but the ultimate answer is that my life, no matter what I was doing, was pointing people to Jesus.
Ashley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up in Crandall, a small town outside of Dallas, I did not know interior design was a profession – people from our town mostly worked blue collar jobs so it was a luxury few could afford. My first taste of home decor was spending my summers decorating (and redecorating) my bedroom. This eventually grew into designing my own bedroom furniture (that my grandfather built) and I took those pieces with me to college. In 2006, I graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and moved to Houston to begin my teaching career. After five years of teaching middle school, I stepped down to raise a family where I focused on creating a home that our family could make memories in. A few years later, in 2015, my husband, Matt, and I decided to move out of the city and into the suburb of Tomball.
It was after that final move and major remodel of our new home in Tomball that ultimately started my path towards creating Moore House Interiors. Through the project of our own home, friends began asking me to help with their projects. The more that people asked for my help, Matt joked that it should be my new business and I think it surprised everyone when I said yes! In 2015, Moore House Interiors (known then as Southern Farmhouse Designs) was formally created and I began the process of building a business while also learning the industry.
In the beginning, I was working solo and only able to offer styling services and virtual design for selections of existing homes. Through the referrals of friends, friends of friends, and family, I had the opportunity to work on a new construction build and fell in love. With the help of mentors, podcasts, books & my friend, Google, I have grown from a team of one to a team of four to offer design services ranging from new construction, renovation design, as well as full service furnishings design. There are plenty of days I still can’t believe my summers of redoing my room would set the course of my career.
After seven years of running my interior design firm, God made it clear that I was missing the life that was right in front of me with my own family & He called me to step away from MHI & into the full time role of being a wife, mother & steward of my own home. For the next two years, I’ll be finishing up homes that my team & I have been working on & will close out this chapter for the time being.
In between the day to day of being a wife & a mom of two preteens, I will be working on my blog, Moore House at Home, where I’ll share my journey of creating our home, in hopes to inspire my readers to create a home that works for their family and lifestyle so that they can enjoy each & every beautiful moment that is in front of them.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal & mission all along for Moore House Interiors to now with Moore House at Home is to help people create homes that they love and are proud to share with their family & friends. I know the importance of home & how it affects everyone who lives there, but also to the people that come into the home. Having a place that is not only beautiful & functional but a place of rest & restoration is so important to me.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
There have been lots of pivots for me in this career. Whether it was when a process that wasn’t working or even a service I was providing didn’t meet the needs of our clients or vendors, I was never scared to change. Change means growth & for me that is super important.
The biggest pivot yet has been transitioning from Moore House Interiors to Moore House at Home. Since I’m not fully there yet, I can’t speak to what this change is going to look like because I have a few years left working with clients, but I think the biggest take away is learning to know when it’s time to shift & change. When I felt God prompting me to step away, I was so scared. I had a team of 4, magazine features on the horizon, and dreams of continuing to grow, so I wasn’t ready to step back. I prayed over the decision for months & He made it so clear that this was the next step for me.
My biggest advice to those when it’s time to pivot, you can’t look to the right & left at what others are doing. You have to determine what success is to you & go for it. For me, it was about being at home with my family & focusing on them while still being able to be creative & help people in their homes.
