Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashley McElvy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Ashley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?

My passion for piercings started in high school when I began getting my ears pierced, gradually adding more each year until both ears were adorned with rings all the way up. Growing up, my mom had several piercings, and she allowed me to be a part of those experiences. Through her, I learned the importance of self expression and individuality from a young age. I was fascinated by how piercings could be such a personal form of art, and that passion only grew as I got older.
When I was 16, I went to a professional piercing studio for the first time to get pierced, and from that moment, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue as a career. The experience inspired me to start my apprenticeship, and about a year later, I was officially piercing.

Ashley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I’ve been a Professional Piercing Artist at Bone Deep Piercings since 2017, and am now the Head Piercer. I offer a wide range of ear, facial, and body piercings, with a special focus on curating and styling ears. After discussing with the client their preferred jewelry styles and the vision they’re aiming for, I create a few design ideas and select jewelry pieces that are cohesive, reflecting their unique personality. I offer only the highest quality jewelry, featuring implant grade titanium, as well as 14k and 18k yellow, rose, and white gold.
I attend the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) confrence annually taking advanced courses with expert instructors.
I am committed to continually expanding my knowledge of sterilization, safe piercing practices, and body anatomy. I strive to provide the best possible experience for each client.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with industry jewelry brands like Maya Jewelry to create unique and transformative looks while styling clients’ ears with their collections. I’ve also had the exciting opportunity to become a pro team member for Ember Body Jewelry and design a piece of jewelry with the brand!
I’ve had the opportunity to travel and guest spot at various piercing studios, allowing me to build valuable connections within the industry, learn new techniques, and work with clients from all over the country. I’ve also had the privilege of participating in special events, including piercing at Coachella in 2024.
My passion gives me the opportunity to meet incredible people and build meaningful connections with each of my clients. It’s incredibly important to me that everyone feels safe, comfortable, and welcome while in my studio. Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?

During and after my apprenticeship, I was introduced to fundamental techniques and quickly realized how crucial it was to understand sterile procedures, use high-quality jewelry, study anatomy, and adhere to safety standards. This knowledge deepened my love for the craft and solidified my dedication to becoming a professional in the industry. In 2021, I attended my first Annual Association of Professional Piercers (APP) Conference, where I had the opportunity to take a variety of specialized classes. This event was a turning point in my career, and it inspired me to continue my education and refine my skills year after year. Since then, I’ve made it a priority to attend the conference annually and stay current on the latest piercing techniques, jewelry quality, and aseptic technique in the piercing industry. Every year, I am excited to learn something new and expand my knowledge, always striving to improve and be the best piercer I can be. I worked diligently and officially became a APP member in June 2023.
