We were lucky to catch up with Ashley McCarthy recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Ashley thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?

They definitely instilled in me the belief of doing my best and believing in my talents. All throughout growing up, they supported my love for the arts and anything creative. That motivated me to keep persisting in my passions.

Ashley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My name is Ashley McCarthy and I’m a visual artist based in Southern California, specializing in hand-made collage art. I started making art at the age of three and the rest is history! Painting and drawing were my biggest passions growing up and all throughout school. Life drawing and printmaking became my focus in college. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art at Sonoma State University. 2018 was the year that I discovered my love for collage as a medium. I’ve been evolving my unique, hand-cut process ever since. My work tends to fall under the surreal category as I love thinking outside the box. I love being playful and expressive with various textures in my collages. Music has been a big passion as well throughout my life, so I naturally combined my love of art with music. I began making cover artwork for music artists. What I’ve learned throughout this journey, is to always persist with your passions and that’s exactly what I’ve done.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

For me, it’s seeing what I’ve imagined in my mind to then being brought to life on either paper or a canvas. And when it turns out even better than I imagined.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

The mission driving my creative journey is simply to keep evolving as an artist and creative. The process is ever evolving through experimenting with different materials, acquiring new inspiration and ideas every day.
