We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ashley Luck. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ashley below.
Ashley, appreciate you joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
This is a loaded question for me. I have learned many lessons in previous jobs, but I think the most beneficial I have learned is how NOT to treat patients. I previously worked at a pediatric medical practice where the doctor often times prioritized money over the patient and their needs. This mindset is completely inappropriate for the profession we are in. I would argue 99% of physicians, nurse practitioners, and PAs go into this field because they want to serve the community and help others, NOT for money. However, many get burned out dealing with the intense demands of the job and the insurance companies and lose that ideology along the way. They start to view patients as numbers and lose their passion in the midst of the burnout. The problem is that the patient is the one who suffers in the end. I am determined after witnessing this kind of behavior to always prioritize my patients over money or anything else for that matter. This is why I allow my patients to have direct access to me. I end up giving more free medical advice than most but this is what I believe benefits my patients most. Access, quality care, and peace of mind is what people deserve when it comes to their health. I am thankful for learning this extremely important lesson early on in my career!
Ashley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a pediatric nurse practitioner that takes care of sick kids in their home. I work for a company called Mom’s Choice Mobile Health which is essentially an urgent care on wheels. We come to you wherever you are- at home, school/daycare, work, etc and provide the medical care you need on your schedule. This is the way medicine used to be, and in my opinion, should still be today. When you are sick, the last thing you want to do is get dressed and go to the doctor’s office and honestly, the other people in the office probably do not want you there either. That is why our company is so unique and valuable- because we provide a service of necessity, medical care, with convenience and comfort allowing you to stay in your home and rest. We particularly focus on the pediatric community which is even better because working parents with an increasing number of things to do each day can utilize this convenient fast service while not having to rework their whole day. We function like concierge medicine but accept most insurance carriers making our services more affordable for everyone.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
ABSOLUTELY! I always knew from an early age I wanted to take care of children when I was older. There is something magical to me about seeing the world through a child’s eyes and helping them grow into the person they are meant to be. Upon completion of my Nurse Practitioner degree, I worked in a traditional pediatric office for a while before finding my true passion in mobile medicine. It has not always been easy but what I do is so rewarding. I truly love what I do, and I think that is what sets me apart from other health care providers. I am in this field for the kids I get to take care of and watch grow up!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Being authentic and honest. In my opinion, there is no better way to gain clients or business than to have integrity and treat every person with the utmost respect and kindness. It does not matter what they can offer you in the ways of networking, status, money, etc, but what YOU can offer them. Treat everyone equally and provide quality care to each and every person you come in contact with. For our company in particular, our business grew mainly by word of mouth which is something I feel proud of. It is also extremely important to acknowledge when you are wrong and apologize. We are not perfect people and will fall short many times; however, how you deal with those situations will set you apart from other companies. A meaningful and genuine apology goes a long way!!
