Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashley Love. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The first dollar earned as a creative was drawing a picture for a family friend in high school. I think it was a picture for her daughter, and she gave me $50. This particular family friend always encouraged me with my drawing skills, so I was very excited when she paid me for my skills. She gave me the push to become a freelancer.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ashley Love, and I’m a fashion designer/fashion illustrator/artist in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I’ve been an artist for over 21 years and designer/illustrator in the fashion industry for over 14 years. In addition to my creative titles, I’ve been a fashion design professor for almost eight years. My career found me. I’d been creating fashion illustrations, and everyone would tell me that I should be a designer. After researching the field, the rest is history.
As much as I love what I do, there are some challenges. One challenge is finding consistent work as a creative. What I’m most proud of is that as much as I’ve looked at other creative avenues, I’ve stayed consistent to fashion. I’m also proud of the clients and attention I’ve gained as a creative.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The one thing that society can do to support artist, creatives, and a thriving ecosystem is to actually pay creatives their worth, especially when they are selling products. One thing that upsets me is when a creative is selling products, or tells of their services, people ALWAYS want to either ask for a discount, or say they can create that same product themselves. That is unacceptable. Pay creative people their worth.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew more about intellectual property. This should’ve been a part of the creative curriculum when I was in undergrad and graduate school. This would’ve definitely helped with protecting my work when I started out.
