We were lucky to catch up with Ashley Lacy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Deciding to start sharing my music has been the best decision I ever made. I had been writing songs for a few years but had never seriously considered doing anything with them. However, when the pandemic struck, it compelled me to delve into that creative side of myself. While working from home, I dedicated my time to mixing and mastering Astralace’s debut song, “Apple Tree.” As soon as restrictions began to ease, I ventured into the open mic scene alongside Zach, my fiancé and the band’s bassist. During that period, we had the pleasure of meeting incredible musicians and amazing individuals. Now, after playing together for a few years with our drummer and long-time friend, Lauren, I am still astonished by our accomplishments.
Ashley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Astralace’s music blends potent lyrics with beautiful yet straightforward melodies. Some songs are slow-paced and emotionally charged, while others are more upbeat and playful. During an Astralace live performance, you will be swept away like a boat on the waves and, with any luck, depart with a smile on your face.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Providing people with a sense of connection has always been an essential aspect of making music. When you realize that, at their core, everyone is fundamentally the same, creating music takes on a significance that transcends oneself. My hope is that anyone who listens to our music can sense a relatability and a reassurance that they are not alone.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Attend live shows! Buy merch! Do whatever you can to seek out local musicians. Houston has an abundantly talented music scene, and the best way to help it thrive is to find out where the music is happening and go watch.
