Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashley Jeter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ashley , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I started drawing at the age of two. My mother purchased a desk that had a light on it, and you could trace whatever you wanted. I started there, and once I felt confident enough to draw with the tracing light my gift started to get better. After a while I was drawing Mickey mouse, goofy and other characters I could make up. I got noticed by my first grade teacher while doodling in class. She nominated me to draw the Christmas mural for the school Christmas program, my eyes lit up and that’s when I knew this was something I wanted to do when I was an adult.
Ashley , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Really I just always drew something and would get paid in middle school and high school to draw portraits of people. After graduating from high school, enhanced my skills by taking up art classes in college. And now I have two stores one on Shopify blackartisbeauty.net and one Etsy that’s been booming blackartisbeauty.com. I sale digital black art, canvas, phone cases, posters, pillows, sweatshirts, shoes, etc. I’m most proud of my Etsy store I just started in Feb 2022 and I already have 321 sales, that’s an accomplishment for me. Especially since I started Etsy out of an act of faith and my love of art for the black culture. I love my people and how many shades and looks we have, our people are so unique and I always love to capture that in my art. I try to post everyday something on my Instagram page celebrating the black culture with my artwork. I put artwork up on my Etsy store every week, I love it. it’s my happy place.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I hope to eventually have a non- profit for homeless women and kids, and kids and donate some if my proceeds to my non- profit. To help them to find a job, have access to work clothes, school clothes for them or their kids, and backpack and school clothes as well. I would love to give back, God has been blessing me so I want to be able to bless others
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I feel the reward of being an artist is forever being inspired. And being able to reach so many people. It’s an amazing feeling to watch people see your artwork and see it from so many perspectives.
