We were lucky to catch up with Ashley Jamison, Msw, Lisw, Licdc recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents instilled in me a deep sense of self-belief, which has been crucial in both my personal and professional life. Their support gave me the confidence to launch my business, become a therapist, and create spaces for Black women to heal and feel empowered. Their influence taught me independence and reinforced that I am capable of achieving whatever I set my mind to. This foundation now guides how I support others on their own journeys to empowerment and healing.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Ashley, a clinical therapist and author dedicated to empowering Black women as they navigate trauma, anxiety, depression, and substance use. Through my practice, Healing Through Melody Wellness, I provide a safe, culturally sensitive space for women to heal and build self-belief. Using approaches like CBT, EMDR, and mindfulness, I guide my clients toward holistic healing that honors their unique journeys. I also created “Heal, Queen”, a self-care journal designed to help women prioritize their well-being in just five minutes a day. My mission is to empower Black women to embrace their enoughness and lead fulfilling, purposeful lives.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe that networking is crucial for success in my field. Building connections with other mental health professionals allows us to share resources and strategies, fostering a supportive community that benefits our clients.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve learned that life is not linear; it’s filled with ebbs and flows. This realization has profoundly shaped my perspective, both personally and professionally. Understanding that setbacks and challenges are a natural part of the journey helps me support my clients in navigating their own ups and downs. Embracing this non-linear path allows for growth and healing in ways that can often be unexpected but ultimately enriching. It’s a reminder that every experience contributes to our overall journey, and resilience can be cultivated through these fluctuations.
