We were lucky to catch up with Ashley Jagow recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The biggest risk I’ve ever taken was quitting my job to open Wanderlust Esthetics during a pandemic. It’s a really humbling experience to constantly see the news talk about the pandemic hurting small and local businesses while you are trying to open your own. It’s definitely not been easy. I’ve poured every ounce of my being into this, but I would absolutely do it again in a heartbeat. It’s been an extremely rewarding experience.

Ashley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Skincare and the beauty industry in general have always been part of my life. I actually grew up figure skating competitively, and getting to have my makeup/hair done for competition days was my favorite part. I’d watch my mom do her skincare routine and makeup while she got ready for work in the mornings. I always wanted to go to the cosmetic counters when we would go to the mall. So, it’s not a surprise to me that I ended up with a career as an esthetician! I look back on those moments as a kid, and they still make me smile. I’m thankful that they helped guide me to my passion.
When I started beauty school, I was all about makeup. Anything glam! I wanted to specialize in event, runway, and bridal makeup. I ended up falling in love with the skin conditions and product chemistry portions of the course. I didn’t have a lot of variety in the skin I worked on while I was in school, so after graduation I made a point to educate myself on skin types beyond what I was familiar with. I took additional courses on hormonal imbalances, pigmentation, adult acne, skincare ingredients, and multicultural skin.
I feel I really found my niche within the corrective treatment scope. I want to ensure that I am working with my client, catering to their lifestyle when it comes to recommendations & changes, and treating their concerns appropriately. I look at it as so much more than surface level. It’s intrinsic, extrinsic, mind, body, and spirit.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Realistic expectations and results that exceed them. Also, the creation of a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
From day one, I’ve always tried to help my clients set those realistic expectations for their skin. I have no problem referring clients out for things that exceed my scope of practice or if what we’ve come up with together just doesn’t seem to be working for them. But during our time together, I’m going to work hard to get my clients to a place that they are comfortable with!

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
A strong support system! My family and friends are so incredibly supportive. They hype me up, share my posts, book appointments, and give out my business cards. Especially my mom, she gives out my cards almost everywhere she goes! She’s my biggest supporter for sure.
