We recently connected with Ashley Huls and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, appreciate you joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
Absolutely, my experience with an exceptional leader was at Mia and Maxx Hair Studio, where Diana Geller was my boss. She played a pivotal role in shaping my skills, going beyond what I learned in cosmetology school. Diana took the time to impart knowledge that isn’t typically covered in formal education, and I continue to apply those lessons in my work today. Despite my initial lack of confidence, she consistently pushed me and instilled belief in my abilities. Without her guidance, I wouldn’t have achieved the success I enjoy in my career today!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I bring 19 years of experience to the world of hairstyling, a passion that traces back to my childhood. Growing up, both of my grandmothers, Mary Walter and Shorty Ramsbacher, were influential figures in the hair industry, owning their own salons. I would sit mesmerized as they showcased their incredible talent. Inspired by their skill and dedication, I knew early on that I wanted to follow in their footsteps.
Fast forward to today, and I am proud to say that I have indeed pursued a career in hairstyling, creating a legacy that even involves my grandmothers as clients. My salon, Flaunt Salon, located in New Ulm, MN, offers a range of services, including colors, cuts, updos, facials, waxing, lash lifts, and tints. It’s a place where expertise meets a passion inherited from generations.
What makes Flaunt Salon truly special extends beyond the variety of services—it’s the unique personal touch and the warm bonds formed with our clients, who have not just become patrons but cherished friends. I take pride in providing top-notch services, carrying forward the traditions instilled by my grandmothers. I invite potential clients and supporters to not just visit Flaunt Salon but to become part of our story—a story that began with a childhood fascination and continues to flourish with every client we serve.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I needed to feel more sure of myself. In the beginning, I thought about quitting a few times. I remember going home and telling my parents that this wasn’t the right path for me, and I wanted to give up. My parents encouraged me, saying I shouldn’t quit because I was good at what I do. They reminded me that dealing with different types of clients is normal in this industry—some can be challenging, and others are great. No matter where you are in your career, you’ll always encounter both kinds of clients. It’s important to believe in your skills. I’ve seen others, just like I used to be, coming out of cosmetology school feeling unsure of themselves. My message to them is to persevere, as I once did, and success will undoubtedly follow.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Consistently challenging yourself to expand and utilizing social media has proven to be a key strategy in growing my clientele. Posting pictures has been particularly effective. Implementing deals like the existing client referral program, where both the existing client and their friend receive a discount on their next service, has also played a significant role. Many of my clients generously share my posts, contributing to client growth. Additionally, a majority of clients opt to prebook right after their appointment. I am very grateful for the fantastic and supportive clients I have today!
