We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ashley Hindy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ashley below.
Ashley, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Working in salons has always been helpful when tying to expand my clientelle, but it has always been a dream of mine to have my own studio on the lake in Westlake Village. Leaving a salon with a steady flow of clients was a risk, but I’ve been at my own space there now for about four months and I’ve been busier than I ever was working at a salon. The initial leap is always the scariest part, but it pays off if you’re doing something you enjoy. Plus, changing thing’s up a bit always brings new energy and experiences. I truly believe that when you love what you do, you’ll naturally attract clients that are a perfect match for what you have to offer. You’ve just got to take that initial leap of faith and trust that it’ll happen.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ashley Hindy and grew up watching my mom loving her job as an Esthetician, so I was always able to see myself going into that field, as well. Although, I still wanted to see what else was out there to make sure I wasn’t settling with something I felt comfortable with, so I majored in Fine Art and I’m grateful for the experience, but ultimately after working in a bunch of different fields relating to my major and marketing, it wasn’t until I worked a job in an art gallery on a cruise ship when they had a spa night for the crew and that was when something inside of me knew 100% that I needed to pursue a career as an Esthetician. All the experiences leading up to that made me realize how fulfilling it is to have a job where you can help people relax + feel good and truly it is the one job I’ve had that just felt right. I’m so grateful to be able to love what I do to the point where it doesn’t even feel like work most of the time.
I specializing in therapeutic, relaxing, and healing facial treatments. I use clean, results-driven and organic products. I love helping my clients with their skin concerns, which ultimately leads to helping with their overall confidence, being happy and comfortable in their own skin, especially without makeup. My favorite part is to help my clients relax and when a client falls asleep or snores during a facial it’s how I know I’m doing something right :)
I was trained with Burke Williams Spa when I first got my license and have additional experience at a dermatologist’s office, so I try to incorporate everything I’ve learned, while at the same time making it as close to a spa experience as possible. I’d say what sets me apart is my focus and commitment on making my clients feel relaxed and empowered, and leaving each treatment with glowing skin and no worries. I strive to create an experience where my clients can escape from reality and leave feeling rejuvenated and more confident + comfortable in their skin.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
My mom is an esthetician, as well and I’m so grateful for all her help, especially when I first went off on my own and she’s so amazing at what she does, but I do think every esthetician has their own craft/style and sometimes her advice might be good for her, but doesn’t necessarily work for me. Advice that maybe I took in the past, but after some time I realized just isn’t for me and that’s ok. When you unlearn and clear things up that don’t work for you, I believe you make room for something better and you create that space to focus on the aspects of your job that you love, which will naturally attract people looking for exactly what you have to offer.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I’d say word of mouth and referrals have always the most effective strategy for growing my clientele, but I’m also really grateful when clients leave reviews because that is extremely helpful, as well. Plus, it helps me understand how clients feel specifically about my services and if there’s anything I can improve on or focus more on.
When I first started my own business, I tried Conejo Valley deals, which I don’t regret doing because I made some really wonderful clients that way, who still come to me monthly. Although, I don’t think I would do it again, because you’re required to discount your prices 50% or more and you’re so busy that it can get pretty draining to put in all that work and energy when you’re not compensated for how much you would normally be making. I do think it was a helpful strategy for putting myself out there and growing my clientele at the beginning though so for that reason I’m very grateful for the experience and the clients it brought to me.
