Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashley Hence. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ashley thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I was involved in a hit and run in September 2018. It was pretty bad and totaled my vehicle. I was blessed to walk away with minimal injuries. At the time I was considering quitting my corporate job and starting a mental health private practice. I was apprehensive of walking away from what I considered financial stability. However, after the vehicle accident my whole perspective changed. I had the cliché “life is short” thought and created a plan to take the self employment leap. I turned my notice in to my employer in February 2019.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor in Carrollton, Texas. I provide mental health services such as individual counseling. Sessions are typically an hour. I specialize in anxiety, depression, self-esteem, career counseling, and multicultural issues.
I’m also a self published author. I wrote a self-care book for the professional woman who thinks she has to have it all together. I’m super excited to tell women that’s a load of crap and help them be fine with throwing the independent woman role in the trash.
I am most proud of the fact that I stuck with the gray areas of self employment that can be anxiety provoking. The uncertainties of self employment have been tough for me as I like certain areas of my life to be structured. Self employment is so unpredictable you have to just roll with the ebb and flow of it. Since 2018 I’ve stuck it out full time and have grown so much from the discomfort of being in the gray.
I feel like I stand out in a crowd as I consider myself to be pretty transparent and real. I have no problems confessing I can be a hot mess myself lol. I’m not perfect nor do I try to be and I think people appreciate my honesty.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Absolutely not! I enjoy meeting dope people who may not recognize their dopeness and helping them identify their greatness. It is so amazing to see individuals transform and it’s such an honor to be trusted during their vulnerability.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
My book lol (SuperWoman Redefined: Why Being Independent Is Overrated). It pushed me to be transparent, vulnerable and own my ish lol. It was a labor of love that definitely pushed me past my comfort zone.
