We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ashley Grubbs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ashley below.
Ashley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success is such a broad term and means something different to everyone. In my experience, having a successful business means realizing that I need a team of people and a strong support system to help me reach my vision and goals. I have an AMAZING organizing team that works directly with clients in their homes so that I can focus on working on the business, not in it. Without my team and their support, we wouldn’t be able to help as many clients and change their lives. It’s a ripple effect!

Ashley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Ashley, the owner of Mind Your Mess. We are a professional home organizing + design company. I’ve been in business since 2016 and just recently added interior design to our services!
I started Mind Your Mess because I knew that I wanted to work for myself and make a direct impact on other people’s lives through the power of home organizing. In 2017 I took a huge leap of faith and left my full time job to focus on growing my little side hustle. Since then, I have grown to a team of 11 and added more services to Mind Your Mess.
We understand that life can get messy but we want people to know that it’s ok – it can all be restored. We truly believe that our homes have a direct impact on our emotional well-being and how we live our lives. Your home should be a haven and with this world consuming more and more, we love teaching people how to get organized and stay organized. Over the years, many clients have asked us for design help and we’ve found ourselves helping with that more and more. I’ve always had a vision of adding these services to MYM but I didn’t know when. I am a huge believer in divine and perfect timing so adding design to our services in 2022 is exactly what God had in store for us!
All of our in-home organizing services are considered all-inclusive. This means that our time spent planning project, shopping for product, taking items to donation, and other work we do outside your home to make sure your project runs smoothly, is included in your package. This makes things very clear for our clients and they know there are no hidden costs!
Over the last 5 years, I have been extremely grateful to grow a business that I 100% believe in and that our clients believe in. Most of our business comes directly from referrals so that says a lot about our work. I am also so blessed to have an amazing team that keeps MYM going and helps me take care of all of our clients and their needs. Here’s to another 5!
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
In 2016 I was working for a company called Airrosti and I actually did enjoy my job. I worked directly under a doctor who treated me really well and made me feel like I was a part of the practice. I still knew I was meant for more. I had this urge inside of me to start something and grow it. I just had no idea what.
I started paying attention to our happiest patients. The ones who were smiling a lot. The ones who were always on time. The ones who never complained about money. The ones who were always kind to me. The ones who INSPIRED me. I got the courage to start asking them questions. What do you do for work? Where did you grow up? What do you like to do outside of work? What are your favorite books and why?
All of these people had something in common. They were all successful entrepreneurs! These people all had a totally different thought process than I did and I knew I wanted to be like them. I knew I was meant for more.
So, I started asking myself what I was really good at and absolutely loved to do. My boyfriend at the time suggested organizing. BINGO! I started researching and sure enough, it was a thing. Over the next few months I started organizing for friends and family and just 7 months later, I left my full time job to become a full time entrepreneur and CEO of my own life!
Over the years, I’ve been able to grow to something bigger than I ever imagined and this year, 2022, I have the biggest visions and dreams than ever. But, I can’t spill those beans yet.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As we all know, 2020 and 2021 were quite the challenge, especially for small business owners. In 2020 we had 5 clients and at the beginning of 2021 I was about to sell my business and try something else. But something inside of me wasn’t convinced I was done with this. I didn’t feel like I had given it my all.
2020 was one of the toughest years of my life. I had a business partner who had just had a baby and decided to be a stay at home mom (which I totally respect), I was moving out of Houston to expand Mind Your Mess into Bend, Oregon, my stepdad passed away due to liver cancer, and Covid had taken over everyone’s lives. Little did I know that this year would be the biggest learning year of my life.
I learned more about WHO I am and what I actually want for my life. I learned that owning a business is a rollercoaster and you can’t just throw in the towel b/c of one unsuccessful year. I learned that the more I love myself and take care of myself, the more I will be able to give to others and regrow my business.
In 2021, I committed to regrowing my business and investing in it again. It was tough. I had developed a fear of failure, something that I had never experienced before. I had to relearn how to live with 100% belief that I can and will do anything and everything I desire. I had to believe that people needed my team and I for help. I had to know that 2020 was there to teach me a lesson.
I am a completely different person now and my visions for Mind Your Mess are bigger than ever before. 2022 is the year and I can’t wait to see what happens!
