We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashley Gladney a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I started as a “Nanny” in high school at the age of 15, here in Memphis. At that age, I realized that this is the type of childcare that I loved, and that was needed. It was in high demand then, and definitely now. I then fell in love with not only caring for children/families but the idea as a business as well. After graduating college, I decided to pursue my business idea, and the rest is history.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
With 16 years of Nanny and Childcare experience and a B.S in Healthcare Management, I used learned knowledge and skills to start this Agency, established in 2016. I’ve always had a love for children and babysat at a young age. But, as a teen, working in the nanny industry, I quickly realized that this type of childcare was needed and in high demand. Even then, I was thinking of ways that I could create a profitable business for myself that would help families. I then fell in love with not only caring for children/families but the idea as a business well. To learn more about the business industry. I enrolled in a class at Advance Memphis, a Non-profit organization located here in Memphis. I was able to learn, create, make a plan and how to target my ideal client.
Today, Mobile Mommy offers high quality Nanny, Babysitting and childcare services in Memphis, TN and it’s surrounding areas. We come to you to tailor your child’s care at your request, in the comfort of your own home. We provide onsite group childcare services for many businesses and organizations. We provide specialty respite care service and are also a major contact for healthcare providers working long hours to care for sick patients.
I am very proud of my brand. We have 5-star reviews, an A+ BBB rating, and an amazing client base. Yet we are still working to do more for the community by offering 24-hour quality care to families in need.
This business is a joy, it’s fun, it’s rewarding, but as any business, it can also be frustrating. Interacting with people can always be difficult. And to be honest, with the pandemic and at-home childcare being essential, it’s been crazy! But I’m always up for a challenge. I also take pride in finding a good match (Nanny) for families in need.
I research and attend classes often, about improving business, new childcare techniques, and resources for parents.
I also learn so much from talking to and meeting with our clients (Moms). To be able to provide the “comfort” that parents are looking for, so that their day away from their child is functional means everything.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started searching and following every “ideal customer” that I came across on social media. I created marketing posts, videos, and flyers and made posts regularly. My social media friends were well aware of my experience and good reputation in the nanny industry, so having their support played a great part in spreading the word. Besides, half of my friend’s list were my high school friends, so they were around, it was my high school job. Everything that I posted was getting so many shares and it was mainly my school mates from Ridgeway High. Make sure your friends on Social Media are supportive!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Since my business overhead is so low, I was able to work to fund my business until I was able to work solely for myself after a year.
