We recently connected with Ashley Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
Every October I donate a percentage of my sales to Cancer Action, a local non profit, in memory of my Mother who lost her battle to breast cancer in 2015.
Ashley , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up in Lenexa, KS. Graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Psychology and Spanish. After working as a recruiter for three years, I decided to go back to school for a complete career change in the beauty industry. I moved to LA and went to Marinello Academy for my license in Esthetics. I had originally wanted to become a make up artist, but came out of school liking hair removal the best. I lived down the street from a sugaring hair removal studio, had an interview with the owner and got registered for a certification class. Sugaring is an advanced technique and I worked my tail off to master the craft! After working in LA for six years, I decided it was time to move back home to be close to family. I was one of the first sugaring practitioners in the Kansas City area, which was pretty cool. I built my business from the ground up and was able to open my very own store front after two and a half of renting space within a salon. I am very proud of the business I have built and hope to continue for many years. The best part of my business is the bond that forms between myself and clients, I see some of them more than my friends! The chats, laughs and cries we have had together…pretty special.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I had a unique craft to offer Kansas City, being one of the only sugaring practitioners in the area. I took the time to master my craft and I believe clients could tell that I was offering a great service. I pride myself on being reliable, timely and professional.

How did you build your audience on social media?
When I relocated to the Kansas City area, I made sure to follow local business’ and would show my support for them on social media, which in turn would result in them doing the same back for me. There is so much success in leaning on and supporting fellow business owners in your community. I made sure to post consistently, with relevant hashtags to my business and was sure to interact with those following me.
