We recently connected with Ashley Crews and have shared our conversation below.

Ashley, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.

HairVentionZ started out as a mobile service in which I traveled to my clients at their convenient locations where I provided men, women and children who are struggling with dry, brittle, and damaged hair, restore it back to life and to it’s natural luster and shine, by way of protective styling, product recommendations, nutritional advice and healthy haircare education & regimens, so that they can feel as beautiful on the outside as they do on the inside. It has grown to offer hair education classes, courses and coaching (coming soon) which we are excited about! In this industry not enough hair education is done most of the time stylists focus on just styling. But I believe in the importance of educating clients about healthy hair care so that when they are not at their appointments they can also care for their hair which contributes to a healthy consistent hair journey. I also founded NyRose Naturals to address my daughters hair concern (cradle cap & sensitive skin) so we offer all natural hair & skincare for kids and their families.

As our brand continues to grow we listen to our clients and customers about their needs and wants to see how we can provide that for them. So in addition to all we offer we have hair quizzes, ebooks and consultations. We really focus on our community that keeps us growing.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I was inspired to start Hairventionz by a colleague turned friend of mine back in 2014 when she seen how well I would style my own hair and I had given her my background in hair care since a small child at age 9. I never knew it would grow to what it is today. I have become a mom during the pandemic and endured many changes with my business and always had an idea to create products in the back of my mind. So in 2020 I launched healthy hair care products for Hairventionz and baby hair care. When my daughter suffered a bad case of cradle cap I created products to help her hair through it. Since then we have helped hundreds of parents with their child’s hair journey and continue to do so. I love what I do. It’s my gift from God and what I use to be a blessing to others.

I, Ashley P. Crews is the owner of HairVentionZ and NyRose Naturals LLC. I am a 23- year specialist in natural hair care and protective styling and I can find the right style to make your hair POP!

This Protective Style Queen is a certified natural hair care stylist and natural hair care consultant. My goal is to help my clients who are struggling with dry, brittle, damaged hair, restore it back to its natural luster and shine by way of protective styling and regimen setting.

My business offers extensions of healthy hair care products, classes, courses, coaching, ( in process of creating a digital haircare platform) crochet styles, box braids and locs with a simple motto ‘Hair is my Passion, Health is my Life’. I am a best selling author times 3 with an ebook “Growing Natural” A Guide to Healthy Hair and A Healthier You’ and Thrive Girl Thrive The Women’s Guide to Abundant Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Well-Being, & children’s book Mommy Because of You, I Love My Hair! I also have a children’s turn family hair and body brand NyRose Naturals , which features hydration bundles, oil moisturizers, baby bonnet, and a cradle cap brush, scalp massager & 100% African Black Soap Hair & Body Bar & Raw Shea butter. HairVentionZ works on instilling love by educating parents, and those who love healthy hair care on how to nurture naturally curly hair.

Have you ever had to pivot?

I have held my mobile hair styling business over 9 years until I became a mom during the pandemic. It was a very difficult time for me to have to scale down from taking clients full time to almost under a part time basis.

My daughter was born just 4 months prior and I had to get in mommy mode to make sure she had all she needed including my time. So I had to figure out outside of my part time job how can I continue to earn from my hair styling business and thats when I started to sell hair care accessories and shortly after natural hair care products (while addressing her cradle cap problem by formulating products to address it). I was able to still earn and be home with my daughter. I also did at home video styling for my clients so that they could maintain their hair without my presence.

This was a huge adjustment for me but it also opened up so much ideas and opportunities for me to grow my business to what it is now being able to offer more than hair styling. Sometimes unexpected changes can take you out of your comfort zone and that’s what the pandemic and becoming a 1st time mom did for me.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

When I started my business I did so well that my clients built it for me by word of mouth! My professionalism, pricing and willingness to travel to them kept them loyal and sharing my information with their love ones.

At the beginning I was not heavy on having a social media presence because my business was building quickly without it, but it wasn’t until I met my now close friend who is a photographer for naturals, he told me that I should be posting on social media and using hashtags to build my following and this was in 2018 when that strategy helped you grow quickly on social media and boy was he right it trippled my clientele instantly.

So my advice is to be genuine, authentic and take very clean nice photos when showcasing your business on social media but most importantly tell a story to your followers they love that.
