We recently connected with Ashley Clark and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ashley thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Research has shown that African Americans tend to have lower levels of financial literacy compared to other demographic groups. This knowledge gap can have significant impacts, especially for those looking to start and manage a business. It was my realization of the profound influence of socioeconomics on financial literacy, including differences in banking services and accessibility in various areas, that motivated me to start my own business venture.
I knew my approach to financial education would be effective after posting a video of my kids learning new words that I had taught them after a long day of work. People began asking if I sold my teaching materials, knowing I already had an entrepreneurial mindset. However, financial literacy was not as widely discussed as it is today, so I wasn’t sure how people would react. Despite this, my focus has always been on making financial education fun, starting with colorful flashcards and interactive classes to engage children and help them feel enthusiastic about learning.

Ashley , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sure, here’s a version of the bio written as if you are speaking:
Hey, I’m Ashley and I’ve always had a love for numbers and money. Even as a little girl, I was thrilled when my dad would bring me a roll of dimes or the latest state quarter. In tenth-grade economics class, I discovered my love for finance and I became fascinated with studying the origins and exchange of money.
I know that my purpose in life is to educate others about finances and I have a special talent for teaching children about currency basics. It’s incredible to see how eager they are to learn and how much fun we can have while doing it. When I’m teaching finance, it feels like I’m that happy little girl again, receiving a roll of dimes from her father.
That’s why I started Sense 2 Cents. We offer a board game, classes, flashcards, books and so much more that make learning about finances fun and engaging for both kids and parents. I’m most proud of being able to empower a generation of financially educated children to break free from generational poverty.
Starting the business was not without its struggles. In July 2019, I became ill and had to take a step back from promoting the business. In September I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis . But with the support of my family and friends, I knew I had to walk in my purpose and recover to continue doing what I love. Doing what a love became my full time business in May of 2020. In 13 short months of starting my business.
So, that’s a bit about me and Sense 2 Cents. I’m excited to continue spreading financial literacy and making it fun for everyone involved.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
To be honest, marketing has been the backbone of my business. I found that running Facebook and Instagram ads really helped get my brand in front of the right audience. As a result, I was able to start outsourcing some of the more time-consuming tasks like managing emails, social media, and even hiring a virtual assistant. It’s amazing how much these small steps have helped me focus on growing the business and achieving key milestones.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
You know what’s amazing? I started my business the same year I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and despite that huge challenge, I still managed to become a six-figure earner in my first year. And get this: just 13 months after starting my business, I was able to leave my full-time job as a banker. It’s been quite a journey, let me tell you but it’s been worth it.
My secret to getting this far while dealing with such a tough battle is simple: I just keep swimming. Like Dory said in Finding Nemo. It’s not always easy, but I keep pushing forward.
