Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Chang
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m the founder and CEO of Sundays, an executive assistant service for working parents. We’re focused on giving parents more focused time at work and quality time with their families. Ultimately, we aim to help more women reach leadership positions, so they can reshape how we think about the balance of work and family.
Before starting Sundays, I spent a decade in the tech industry in San Francisco. I began my career at Readme, a developer tool company, as the first employee. Then I moved into product management in healthtech, and most helped to scale Carta’s Venture Capital Business from $10 to $100M in revenue.
I’ve been building Sundays for the last year and a half. We currently support about 100 families and have a team of 15 executive assistants. I’m super excited about the impact we’ve made so far for the famlies we work with.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think it’s really easy to see a career as smooth and successful from the outside, and it rarely feels that way on the inside. For me getting started in my career, I didn’t have any background in engineering or computer science, and so I had to learn a lot of that on the job. That left me constantly feeling like I didn’t know enough and I was behind.
As I’ve gotten more experienced, I’ve found that this was actually an advantage because it forced me to teach myself and get comfortable in situations where I didn’t know what I was doing. This has turned into one of the most valuable skills becuase I trust myself that I can figure out most problems.
At Sundays I’ve had to learn everything about starting a business. The only things I knew about business coming into it were the success stories that I had read about. As we’ve been building the company, it’s become really clear to me that those stories skip a lot of the learning and the day-to-day work that goes into building a company. I feel like every day as I’m building it, I’m learning through constantly making mistakes.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sundays is an executive assistant service specifically designed for working parents. Our mission is to help parents reclaim their time, allowing them to focus at work and enjoy quality time at home. We’re known for our holistic support approach. About 50% of our clients are families where the parents work nine-to-five jobs. These families seek to maximize their time with loved ones after work, and we assist them by handling all the tasks that keep their households running smoothly, from scheduling dentist appointments to planning summer camps.
The other 50% of our clients are a mix of business and family clients. These are often individuals who have left corporate roles to start their own consultancies, startups, or small businesses. We take pride in supporting these clients holistically as well, providing traditional executive assistant services in addition to offering support at home.
What sets us apart is our human-centered approach. While we leverage technology to enhance efficiency, our core focus remains on building and maintaining personal relationships. This relationship-based support allows our executive assistants to truly understand the families they work with—their goals, preferences, and daily routines. For instance, if you need to schedule a dentist appointment, your assistant already knows your dentist and might even have them on speed dial, making the process seamless.
In addition to our human touch, we are smart about using AI and other technologies to ensure our team operates at peak efficiency. Lastly, our team is made up of parents, so we have firsthand experience with the challenges our clients face in balancing family and work.
What are your plans for the future?
We spent the first few months last year refining and iterating on how to best solve the challenges faced by working parents. Since the beginning of 2024, we’ve focused on scaling to serve as many families as possible while ensuring that our team has consistent processes in place to set every family up for success. I’m genuinely excited about what the future holds.
Our primary focus moving forward is to continue growing our existing business and expanding our reach. In addition, we see a significant opportunity to partner with businesses to support the parents on their teams. Parenthood is a lifelong journey, not just the nine months of pregnancy, and companies that thoughtfully support working parents will have a tremendous advantage in the workplace.
Finally, we’re experimenting with a major shift—offering in-person support in addition to our current remote services. This will take the form of a house manager service, where someone comes to your home a couple of times a week to help with tasks like tidying up, doing dishes, and laundry. These are the kinds of tasks that often prevent families from spending the quality time together that they truly deserve.
