We were lucky to catch up with Ashley Chamberlain recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ashley thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
My amazing boss story goes back to my first official job as an accountant for a local transportation company. This boss, my now father-in-law, changed the small business game for me. He showed me how to treat people and never forget that they are the center of everything. The relationships you build with your employees, business referral partners, customers or clients are what should drive you every day. Treat people with decency and kindness, and business follows.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am the CEO and founder of Chamberlain and Good Company. We are an accounting firm, serving small to medium size businesses. We assist with cash flow to improve profitability and decrease liability. I have always been an accountant by trade but found myself in a top position in my industry at a very young age. I wanted to make a bigger impact and be able to help more people (outside of my full time job) so I started my company. I am so grateful to be able to say we know exactly what sets us apart from others because our clients remind us all the time. We maintain this “mom and pops” feel by providing personable touches and consistent communication while delivering corporation results. I am incredibly proud of the company culture myself and our CFO have been able to maintain. I have rockstar accountants and assistants that show up every day to serve our clients to the best of their ability. We are all very close, friends and family, and recognize that “life happens”. We are by each other’s side every step of the way. This has formed a close bond and trust throughout the company.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Our CFO, Whitney, and I go way back to a job we held at the same time. Whit and I were assistant controllers for a large construction-like company local to us. She focused more on the financials and AR, while I focused on payroll and human resources. We worked side by side, every day, for years until I left the company during COVID. I started the new Controller position elsewhere but Whitney and I remained friends. I called her out of the blue, mid-summer, to completely brain dump on her. I wanted to tell her everything I could: my hopes and dreams, vision, and try to convince her to join me. My goal became: figure out how to bring Whitney in, and I ran with it. Several years later, she stands by my side in most decisions and through most life events. We attend birthday parties for our littles, weddings for our families, and sit back to relax with outside of the company friends. It’s a beautiful partnership.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Our biggest referral source is word of mouth, but that doesn’t happen over night! We are heavily involved in paid and free networking groups locally, plus free and paid networking groups online. I am on the board of a local BNI chapter, a non profit, and commit a lot of my time to nurturing relationships with current clients. They are our best sales people!
