We were lucky to catch up with Ashley Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley , appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I think the biggest risk is just starting. I’ve been doing makeup now for 6.5 years and till this day I believe starting is the riskiest. Not because of start-up costs, support or finances, because all of those things are factors, but because sometimes we can stand in the way of the reward that comes with the risk. I sat in self doubt for the longest, worried about how I would perform or if I was actually capable. Growing up I was always quiet, to myself and this career would force me to converse with people, engage on social media, network, etc. Basically forcing me outside of my comfort zone. I remember not too long after I graduated high school, Homecoming season came along and I decided to post that I was doing makeup for $25. When I got my first few inquiries my heart sank! I immediately went into shock but also excitement! Once I started I knew I couldn’t stop. With each client I wanted to get better and I fell in love with making women feel beautiful. Makeup is more than just a job, it’s therapy! Sometimes I’m having the worst day, but makeup eases my mind. On top of that I get to learn about my clients, they vent to me and vice versa! It’s been a beautiful journey and I thank God for my career, clientele and support. I’ve learned that some of the highest risks reap the highest rewards! Although some plans and ideas may not work out, there is always a reward and when you’re ready God will show you. And that’s what keeps me going!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ashley Brown, a believer, makeup artist, entrepreneur and business owner. I specialize in bridal events, special occasions and everything in between! I started my career in makeup 6.5 years ago. I have enjoyed the journey ever since. Growing up I was always into makeup. Of course in my younger days wearing makeup outside of the house wasn’t allowed, but I definitely took advantage at home. I remember in middle school I begged endlessly to wear makeup, my mom finally agreed to let me wear eyeshadow and that was all I needed to hear! I used to always wear shimmery eyeshadows to match my outfit, (I loved a good gold and pink/blue combo). Fast forward to after high school, I started offering services for $25 and from my first client I have never put my brushes down! I worked part time, was a full time college student and still made time to cater to my craft. During this time everything for me was hectic, but I loved the hustle. It taught me some of life’s biggest lessons; time management, saving, budgeting, discipline, networking, investment and so much more. It’s true that talent takes you far, but God will bring you connections, opportunities and resources you couldn’t have gotten on your own! What I’m most proud of is the growth. Growth is a priority for me. All of my accomplishments are truly blessings from God! I want my clients, potential clients, and supporters to know that I will always strive to provide the best service and look for ways to improve in all areas!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing your clientele is consistency! Your clientele needs to ALWAYS see you. MAKE. THAT. POST. If not, it’s out of sight out of mind. Another strategy is engagement, show your clients you support them, tag them in your post, comment on their posts, create a sense of community with your brand! Small businesses have the luxury of really connecting with their clients/customers.. get creative and take advantage!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Customer service has helped build my reputation in the market. I don’t care if you’re the best at what you do, if your customer service skills aren’t top tier you will not reach your full potential. Clients/customers are your life line, treat them as such! I’m not saying disregard your boundaries or be a pushover but I’m saying be a solution based business owner! Also, be your authentic self! That’s another key component! Customers appreciate authenticity, that alone will take you far!
