We recently connected with Ashley Boyleston and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My life was pretty hectic growing up. I was raised by my father and brother. My father owned his own electrical contracting business and taught me to very independent and hands-on from an early age. Unfortunately, my father ended up in trouble after messing up some finances. He did a short time away. This landed me in foster care and I eventually ended up losing my place in our schools honor program. After school I worked hard and did schooling online here and there. I quickly advanced in my career but being a young woman in construction had many disadvantages. I worked for a small restoration company based out of Florida. The company taught me so many things and my boss really empowered me to be a strong and confident person within my career. I ended up leaving the company and headed back to my small town of Lexington, SC. I was into integrative medicine and how there are natural things that can impact your health. Including mold! I studied and joined a few organizations and purchased the equipment to start my own business. I’m really on a mission to show everyone how important it is to check for mold and know the signs. I offer a free mold assessment every month and really want to help the people in my community!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always been a very spontaneous person. It has got me in good and bad positions. For a long time( o couldn’t find my niche. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I know I wanted to own my own business. My kids are my entire life and when I started integrating more integrative medicine into our lives, I learned that mold exposure can really harm our health especially if we are sensitive to it. For a while I kept encountering people that would turn it down, say it will scare people because mold is everywhere. Realizing that a lot of people didn’t understand how mold damaged your home and potentially your health, I felt the desire to spread as much knowledge as I can. Currently, I offer mold assessments, indoor air quality tests, and water restoration. I grew my business with the mindset of helping the community and providing a space for women that want to go into construction or learn about the restoration world. One of the goals in restoration is to prevent mold and ensure clients homes are healthy and mold will grow almost immediately. So I decided to offer complimentary air quality test with every restoration project I do to ensure homes are left in its highest quality. This will provide transparency within the industry and give home owners peace of mind. Our homes are basically the stomping grounds for mold growth and when a water disaster strikes, I believe it’s very important to repair its home to equal or better condition but also ensure the health of the families living in it!
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I have a few of my friends that are successful business owners so I really took their advice and started small. I bought only the basic equipment I would need and networked within a few Facebook groups. I started doing research on SEO and learning more about marketing. I was very introverted when I started the company and thought I was doomed! Starting Healthy Home really helped me grow personally as well!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Networking and networking. Honestly, my personal hell. I’ve met so many amazing people with the same mindset as me that referred clients to me. I am very thankful for these amazing relationships that I’ve built!
