We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ashley Alexander. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ashley below.
Ashley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The story behind my mission and my brand is to provide affordable but stylish clothing to all. It is a boutique that brings out the elegance that women behold. I wanted to create not only a boutique that shows women how beautiful they are but rather showcase a diverse boutique for all shapes and sizes. I want to be an inspiration to women who are reaching for greatness but also let them know that while they are reaching for the stars, they are able to look gorgeous while doing it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ashley Alexander, and I have an upscale boutique called Public Attraction located in Huntsville, Alabama. I also have my own brand called Get Your Own $uga Daddy.
I have such a huge passion and love for fashion, which has allowed me to become a black-owned fashion company. It’s not just a hobby but rather a fulfillment and joy I get when styling others. My love for fashion has allowed me to create my own lane in the fashion industry and create my own brand. My boutique provides clothing for the sophisticated, the sexy, and the classy.
I created Get Your Own $uga Daddy with the hopes that it will encourage women to want someone who values, respects, and treats them like a queen. I am big on inspiring women, and being an advocate for women to not only love themselves but make sure that who they allow in their space loves them just as much or even more. I want my brand and boutique to bring happiness, and security and to feel the love right they step into my door.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My first business was a consignment shop with my Aunt Pricilla Stone Pope. My aunt was always my biggest cheerleader, and my biggest supporter in life. The consignment shop was called My Secret Closet.
Now, with every business especially first-time business owners and entrepreneurs, it’s a lesson learned.
I learned a lot while owning My Secret Closet. I had some losses, but I had some wins. I believe opening My Secret Closet, was the stepping stone to my owning my own brand and boutique now.
I believe sometimes we all must fail in order to succeed. Failing elevated me into wanting to go harder, make smarter business moves, and enjoy the journey along the way. If I never opened My Secret Closet, there would not be Public Attraction or Get Your Own $uga Daddy.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media plays such a vital role in today’s market and society in how people shop, see what’s trending, and how fashion is portrayed. Because of the role social media plays, it has allowed me to interact with a worldwide base of new and current customers.
Social media is an investment in my eyes. The more I show, post and let others see the type of fashion and clothes that my brand and my boutique carry, the more they are willing to send me messages, come to my shop or even get ideas on how to coordinate and wear their clothes. I started to invest in Facebook Ads that would allow my boutique to be in a position to get more create awareness and increase my customer base.
I strive to keep new and reoccurring customers in the loop of new clothes that may come in, sales, or events that I may happen by sending emails, text messages, and postcards.
My best advice would be to engage with your clients, create content that will grasp their attention, and be intentional. With my loyal customers, I have loyalty points that allow them to each time they come into the store to use, and it increases with each buy. When you show good to people, they will show good back to you.
