Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashley “A. Milli” Millon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ashley “A. Milli” thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
The most important lesson I learned in this industry was to use your voice! I had a boss who was very disrespectful and made me feel that I wasn’t worthy enough as a woman to hold such a high position. I felt like anything I did that would help was not pleasing to him. The more I tried it just wasn’t good enough. One day his disrespect was way to much in which he became aggressive and invaded my personal space. As I stayed professional I was mute, I felt so defeated that I didn’t stand up for myself professionally in that moment. As a woman in media, I was told to stay in my place and know your role for your position. That men are superior and women has no say so. That was the moment I knew that I would never let anyone disrespect me or discredit me ever again. However, I handled the matter professionally. I felt that moment on that no one in the media industry will ever disrespect me as a hardworking woman again. That incident has helped me to gain respect for myself, to stay professional, and to always stand up for what s right because I am worthy! It has helped me use my voice on my podcast, it has helped me to encourage other women in media to stand up for themselves because we as women in this industry matter. The lesson I learned was that to always use your voice because the loudest voice is usually the one that is silent.
Another important lesson I have learned on this journey was as an intern at 22 years old, I was told my voice was never good enough for radio. That has always been a trigger for me. This still sticks with me to this day! I have always felt within this industry that you have to prove people wrong that you belong here! So the lesson was practice makes perfect! I practiced for hours, wrote commercials to just make my voice better and better. To this day I wonder where I would be if I didn’t learn that lesson of determination. It surprises me that this lesson of determination has helped me in this industry to be the best and to never let something negative defeat you.
Ashley “A. Milli”, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started out in media as an college intern for radio. As a young child I was always participating in programs that I would have to speak at or be the mistress of ceremonies. I would always do the church announcements at church so that is what led me to major in Communications with a concentration in Radio/Television at Alabama State University. As a college student my passion for media grew as I would intern at a television and radio station. But it was radio that really stuck with me. I was always told that I had the gift of gab and to use it!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When the pandemic hit, I lost my job and that really devastated me. I went through depression and anxiety because it felt that everything I worked so hard for and overcoming career obstacles was just ripped from under me. So I had to figure something out to get me out of this depression. My resilience of getting back in to media no matter what led me to start my own podcast show in which I interview celebrities, music artists, as well as other entrepreneurs. I’m most proud of just making that step to find my voice again and know that I’m worthy for everything that God has in store for me.
