We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ashleigh Cropper. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ashleigh below.
Ashleigh, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
I often hear others say, “Oh, I most definitely could not do that!” when they find out I started my own business. It surprises me a bit because (excuse me if this sounds cliché) if you want something badly enough you will find all the ways to make it happen.
There is something very magical about having a camera, taking the images, editing them and then printing the final product. Since I could remember, I wanted to be in a creative career. After some years in the corporate marketing world, I just knew that wasn’t it for me. I loved doing photography as a hobby, but wanted so much more to come from it!
Going from an idea to actually establishing a business isn’t easy. I think being a bit naïve really helps and allows for it to not be as daunting. When I knew I wanted to jump in full time I figured the first thing I better do is create a name! If I ever wanted to grow my business outside of just myself I couldn’t have my personal name as the business, I needed something else. I had a few ideas in mind and went to the Colorado Business Database Search to see what was available. Once I had Red Aspen Photography registered as a business, I then had to showcase and sell my service. Off I went into creating a website with a separate email address. If I was going to collect funds for my services then that had to go somewhere separate from my personal account, so I went to my bank and set up a business account; which then led to needing a software service that tracks all my financial actions. Then on and on it went!
I think if you had told me from the beginning I needed to register with the state, do all the paperwork, set up accounts, use credit cards accurately, everything that I should and shouldn’t do as a business owner (the list is endless), that it would be paralyzing and likely would have prevented me from even starting. BUT, in the end it is worth it! Plus, I learned invaluable skills and how to run my business.
The single one thing that I did along the way that helped so much was: any time I had to go somewhere or talk to someone on the phone (i.e. set up my business bank account, register my business, etc…), I always asked if they knew of anything else I may need to do to establish and get my business running smoothly. Everyone is happy to help if you just ask. It has led me to some of the best people that support my business (especially my accountant!)
Within a month I was up and running officially! It felt amazing to know all the steps I took were so I could have the opportunity to run my business smoothly and correctly. From proper insurance, correct transactions, filings accurate, everything registered, I don’t have to worry about any of it and now it is a seamless part of my business and being an entrepreneur. Overall, entrepreneurs wear many hats and that is part of being independent and not working for someone else.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a portrait photographer that focuses on weddings and families. I also see myself as a storyteller and historian. I always feel like I’m capturing history as it unfolds right in front of me. It is a very special opportunity to have others trust me and my work. I do not take it lightly and feel humbled to express these stories and memories through images. My work is often described as very natural and organic with a personal perspective. I enjoy really getting to know my clients and I make sure everyone feels comfortable in front of the camera since I know that is not always a comfortable thing to do. I can’t stand stiff poses or weird positions, but rather give direction and allow for some lovely, real moments to happen.
I am most proud of the fact that I have long standing clients who I have been photographing for nine plus years. I think that is a testament to my commitment as a business owner, professional, creative and someone who truly cares about those that I am working with. It’s been such a joy watching couples get engaged, then married, then start families. Then I am fortunate to watch those children grow in front of my camera.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I will say it over and over again and believe the backbone of my business growing has been because of referrals! There is nothing more powerful than a previous client referring me to their family or friends. It is the best compliment too!
I could give a million reasons why someone should work with me and why I will be a great fit, but when someone else shares those reasons with a potential client and refers me, that trust comes pre-built, so it creates an instant client for me.
I am also really grateful in the wedding industry for all those vendors who recommend me as well. The wedding community in Colorado, especially along the front range has been amazing.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe professionalism and my commitment is what has supported my reputation and continued work for many years. My degree is in business management and I run my business the way one would expect a business to run. I use contracts, get signatures, apply for licenses or permits, use insurance, and I make sure everyone understands and agrees to what my sessions entail and how the process will go when working with me.
Within the wedding industry, I manage my company with high standards and ethics. I have been told by planners how professional I am and that often it is hard to find a photographer with that trait.
I deliver my images and galleries right when I say I will, if not before. I make sure communication is quick and timely. I assure everyone I will be set and know exactly where I need them to be and when. After my sessions or work I share my gratitude to work with great vendors or wonderful families. I think it’s important to try and lift the photography industry by being a positive, committed and professional photographer.
