We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashlee Rivers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashlee, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
While I think there are various influences one could note in becoming succesful, I personally feel as though obtaining (and/or) maintaining an element of consistency in your craft could eventually lead one into becoming successful in what ever the main “goal” they wish to achieve is.
For example, as it relates to my profession in creating music, I’ve come to learn that I have better chances of landing beats I create with artists and/or their teams the more I consistently create quality music, and have them ready at a moments’ notice to send out. While factors such as getting the music directly to an artist or a label can vary depending on whom it is, the underlying advantage I feel I have is the notion that my catalog is deep enough to where the odds of landing a placement is favorable, because of the hours I put in to creating and obtaining a good bit of music.

Ashlee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For starters, my name is Ashlee. I’m a music producer based in South Carolina. I’ve been producing for 9 going on 10 years now, having achieved a Bachelor’s Degree majoring in Music Industry, with a minor focused in Business. While I have worked with various artists at this point in my career, both independent and major, I still find myself learning as I continue to manuever my way through the music industry. I’ve collaborated with various independent artists such as Marr Grey, Kennedy Rd, Sute Iwar, Jahkoy, Aaryan Shah (just to name a few), in aim to create solid projects for them, and for the world to hear. As of late, I’ve had both artists and writers reach out to me to work, as my goal is to create the best quality of music not only for the public, but music in which I feel will elevate and even challenge the artist/writer I’m working with. My goal is to bring the best version(s) of themselves out through the music. I’m incredibly proud and grateful to have recieved recognition for the work I’ve put in through the years, however I am looking forward to (continuing) to push the boundaries sonically, further allowing for more female producers such as myself proper recognition and appreciation in such a male dominated industry.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the satisfaction of hearing and seeing an audience react to the music I’ve made. From the dance videos I’ve seen to some of the songs I’ve worked on, to seeing live reactions to the music, the joy for me is seeing the joy of others, truly. This, partnered with the artist(s) I’m working with recieving their respective recognition across music platforms and playlists is always fun to see and experience.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
While it may have its faults from time to time, a lot of my networking and collaboration has been aided by/acquired through Instagram. That, along with word of mouth has been very beneficial in people either hearing about me, and/or hearing beats that I’ve either co-produced, or produced by myself. Seeing my credits (song placements) visibly on my profile has led to creatives reaching out to work with me as well!
