We were lucky to catch up with Ashlee Norris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashlee, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Today…. Could I work for someone else? ABSOLUTELY NOT..lol. Now, a few years ago, my answer would have been different. During Covid, a hairstylist was considered non essential. So that meant, no clients and no income. Additionally, unemployment wasn’t setup to help out self employed individuals. Thankfully , I got through that rough time with prayers and amazing clients who supported me financially event though they didn’t receive a service.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always had a passion for the hair and beauty industry all of my life. I have been licensed for fourteen years and proud owner of Simply Beautiful Hair Salon for ten years, in Wichita,Ks. In that time ,I’ve mastered a wide range of hair techniques including long hair, cutting, and natural hairstyling.. However. her specialty and passion is Sisterlock™️ and microloc services.
I believe in continued education and strive to stay at the forefront of my field with knowledge of new products and services available in order to provide excellent service to my clientele. In January 2019, I traveled to Houston to obtain certification to become the first certified Sisterlock™️ Consultant in Wichita.
I place high value on listening to my clients, understanding their needs and respecting their hair. When clients enter the salon, they are greeted and encouraged to grab a complimentary snack and enjoy being pampered.
I am most proud of the elevation of my brand. I’ve gone from a small salon, to a suite and now to a salon that houses two other beauty professionals. We created a space that is warm and inviting, all while providing a laid back and and fun atmosphere.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been my clients. They are my walking billboards. I hear stories all the time of how women stop them in the stores, at the gym, and at restaurants asking about their hair.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Along with being a business owner, I’m also a single mother of two active boys. Sometimes, it can be a bit of a struggle to balance motherhood and boss-lady on a daily. I have an amazing support system that helps me whenever I call on them.
