We were lucky to catch up with Ashlee Gendron recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashlee, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
The defining moment in my career was when I had children. I wanted a flexible schedule to be with my children, because working in an outpatient clinic for 9-10 hours a day, seeing a patient every 30 minutes was recipe for burnout.
I was also devastated when my OBGyn’s answer to my post partum issues was to “just do kegels.” The lack of support fueled some post partum depression and I knew at that moment that I wanted better resources for myself and for all women. This shifted my focus to pelvic floor therapy with a passion to bring awareness to women going through their post partum challenges. And now the post partum has expanded to birth preparation, perimenopause and post menopause.

Ashlee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Ashlee Gendron, and I am a doctor of Physical Therapy. I began my career in outpatient orthopedics with a wonderful mentor. His skills were heavy in Maitland manual therapy and I appreciated that. After I had my children, I had a lot of pelvic floor issues that I felt I couldn’t fix myself. Adding the pelvic floor specialty to the manual skills was a perfect combination for treating; pelvic pain, incontinence, prolapse, post partum pain, diastasis recti, pregnancy preparation, menopause and more!
Having been through this journey of post partum incontinence, pain, and depression I feel that I can truly empathize and relate to my clients. I have a pelvic floor and orthopedic background with a multidisciplinary, whole body holistic approach. I offer in office sessions, as well as concierge services for those post partum mothers who don’t want to leave the house, or have additional children, or anyone who wants treatment in the comfort of their home.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what built my reputation the most was being present in as many events as possible and getting to know the birth worker community. Word of mouth has been a very strong marketing tool. As an introvert, I had to force myself out of my comfort zone and just make an appearance and talk to people within my community (doulas, midwives, other pelvic floor PT’s and OT’s, chiropractors). I also had the opportunity to treat a colleague during her pregnancy, which showcased my strengths as a practitioner. In addition, I took the time to have other practitioners treat me, so I could put myself in the shoes of my patients for the importance of self care and personal health and wellness.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is giving exceptional one on one care and optimizing search engine strategies for clients to find you. I have been trying to get my name out there on several different platforms, so it makes it easier for people to find me (google maps, google reviews, instagram, FB, specialized health and fitness apps, local wellness group affiliations, local FB groups). It is still a work in progress, but business is slowly growing, and with the help of satisfied clients I am getting more and more referrals.
