We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashlee Clanton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ashlee, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To become successful it takes putting the time in and staying focused. Owning my own business has shown me that you will have time when you may not have clients or feel discouraged, which is fine! I do not let these times get to me and I just focus on what I can do next to make my business even more successful. My business is only 3 years old and I had reached 5 figures within the first year while being a full-time high school student. Another lesson I learned is to not focus on other people’s success but to only worry about yours. The time you take focusing on someone else could be used to come up with ideas to elevate your business. The main lesson I follow in life and with my business is to never be content where I am in life or with my business but to figure out how I can become even better than I am now
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Ashlee Clanton and I am a Pre Dental student studying Public Health at Towson University. I own a business offering Cosmetic Teeth Whitening, Tooth Gems, and Eyebrow Threading Services. I came up with my name The Tooth Fairy because I thought it would be a very cute touch being as though I offer teeth services. My love for dentistry started in 2020 when I took my first client. Over the years I have seen clients cry with joy and regain confidence within themselves just by being serviced by me. Making clients feel better about themselves no matter if they had straight teeth or not made me feel great inside and slowly became my favorite part about owning my business. I noticed that I was changing lives one smile at a time and realized I could do even more if I became a dentist! My goal is to be able to offer services such as veneers, oral surgery, and even botox/filler once I become a doctor. What sets me aside from other service providers is that even though I am young I am also reminded of my professionalism and charisma. I always make sure my clients are satisfied no matter what the case may be.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Since I was a child I had always wanted to be a lawyer. I was told by multiple family members growing up that it would be a perfect profession for me. Once I started my business and it got close for me to choose my major I knew that dentistry was the path for me. I loved making my clients gain confidence within themselves after getting service by me and I knew I wouldn’t want to do anything else.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The main advice I can give for building your audience is to post every day! You get out what you put into your business! If you take the time to market yourself you will start to see that growth you have been looking for. Social media plays a huge role in marketing yourself in the world we live in today so you need to make sure you are promoting yourself as much as possible. That one video or photo that you think nobody might like could be the content that makes you go viral.
