We were lucky to catch up with Ashka Din recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashka, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken in my life was leaving my 9-5 job at one of Houston’s most prestigious maternal fetal medicine clinics to become a stay-at-home mom. I had been a sonographer for over 10 years, specializing in high-risk pregnancies, and I loved my work. It was secure, fulfilling, and I had built a strong reputation in my field. But after having my two children, I realized I wanted to be more present in their lives. The pull to be at home with them full-time was strong, but leaving behind a stable career I had spent years building was incredibly daunting.
While being a stay-at-home mom was deeply rewarding, there was still a part of me that missed my passion for ultrasound and working with expectant mothers. That’s when I had the idea to launch Oh My Baby Ultrasound (OMB), a mobile ultrasound business. It was a huge leap—starting my own business, especially in a field where I had always worked in a structured medical environment. But I saw a gap in the market: families who wanted the intimate experience of seeing their baby’s first moments in the comfort of their own homes.
I took the plunge, invested in the equipment, and started OMB, offering both diagnostic and elective ultrasound services. I’m now able to combine my love for ultrasound with my desire to create special, comfortable, and memorable experiences for families—while still being there for my own.
It’s been challenging, no doubt, but also incredibly rewarding. I’ve built something from the ground up and have been able to grow my business while having the flexibility to be with my children. Looking back, it was definitely a risk, but one that has shaped not just my professional journey but my personal life as well. It was the best decision I could have made.
Ashka, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Ashka Din, the proud founder of Oh My Baby Ultrasound (OMB). I graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Kinesiology and Psychology, always knowing I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. My journey into ultrasound began serendipitously—I saw an ad for ultrasound school in a local newspaper and decided to apply. I graduated from Houston Community College in 2011 and spent the next 11 years working at a prestigious maternal-fetal medicine clinic, gaining invaluable experience in high-risk obstetrics. I’m registered in OB, abdomen, and fetal echocardiography, which has given me a comprehensive understanding of prenatal care.
After having my two miracle babies, I decided to take a break and become a stay-at-home mom. But the desire to create something of my own never left me. With no prior business experience, I took a leap of faith, formed an LLC, and launched OMB. Today, I’m proud to bring a unique and personalized ultrasound experience directly to families in their homes, offering both elective and diagnostic services. Patients no longer have to wait in traffic, sit in waiting areas, take time off of work, or find child care while they attend medical exams- we offer the utmost convenience for not just mom but the whole family! What sets OMB apart is our focus on creating unforgettable bonding moments, not just through advanced technology like 5D/HD live imaging but by making these special milestones accessible and comfortable for the whole family. I’m most proud of the connections I’ve built and the joy I’ve been able to bring to so many families. I want my clients to know that OMB is more than just a service—it’s a shared journey through one of life’s most beautiful chapters.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has undoubtedly been word-of-mouth referrals and building genuine connections with my clients. I truly believe that the experience I provide speaks for itself. When families have a memorable and intimate ultrasound experience at home with OMB, they naturally want to share that with their friends, family, and other expectant parents.
In addition to that, social media has played a huge role in expanding my reach. I focus on creating engaging, relatable, and educational content that resonates with expectant mothers and families. Whether it’s sharing stories from past clients, posting snippets of ultrasound sessions, or talking about the emotional side of pregnancy, this approach has helped me connect with a broader audience and build trust. Consistency in posting, using Instagram reels, and engaging with followers has been key.
Another important strategy has been partnering with midwives and OBGYNs who align with my values of creating a personalized and comforting pregnancy experience. These collaborations help spread the word about my services within the birth community, adding a layer of credibility and trust.
Lastly, I ensure every client feels special. From the moment they inquire to the end of their session, personalization and attention to detail are at the forefront of my approach. I believe that making each family feel valued and appreciated results in loyalty and referrals, which has been essential in growing my clientele.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training and knowledge, I believe that empathy and strong communication skills are critical for succeeding in my field, especially in maternal-fetal ultrasound services. As a sonographer and business owner at OMB, I work closely with expectant parents, often during emotional moments. Understanding their excitement, concerns, and needs allows me to create a safe and comforting environment.
Additionally, being patient and adaptable is essential. No two families or pregnancies are the same, so it’s important to adjust how I approach each session to ensure every family feels valued. Building trust and rapport with clients makes all the difference in providing a meaningful and memorable experience. Finally, attention to detail, both in the medical and personal aspects of the job, helps ensure that I provide not only accurate results but also unforgettable bonding moments for families.
