Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashia Walker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
ASHIA, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I have been a therapist for now 15yrs & the establishment of Reformation Massage & Bodywork has always been a dream that came to flourish in 2020 during the COVID Pandemic. Just like the rest of the world I was laid off from my job and isolated with my family for months not knowing how or even when our lives would ever return to normal. I homeschooled my granddaughter and my daughter while my son and daughter in law tried to find odd jobs to help bring in income and alleviate the stress off of me. Many of my clients suffer from chronic pain or were in recovery from sports injury or surgery began to reach out to me to continue treatments in their homes. While I was thankful to be working and bringing in income traveling to clients homes began to be overwhelming and I needed to find an office convenient for my clients to come to as well as continue to build clientele. In June of 2020 I was blessed to find a office that catered to the needs of my clients as well as myself.

ASHIA, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a Master Massage Therapist for 15yrs now and I can honestly give all the credit for pursuing this career to my eldest son who also by the way is a massage therapist. My son was at the age where he was trying to decide what he wanted to do post high school so when he decided on massage therapy we interviewed at many schools until we interviewed at The National Massage Institute in Falls Church VA. The advisor who worked with us was phenomenal and showed us how massage was medically necessary and with the advancement in studies of how beneficial massage was and would be. To be honest this appealed to me since I myself suffer from chronic pain & I also had a son who suffered from severe asthma and western medicine just was not helping resolve our issues. While my son was unable to attend at that time I made the decision to change my career and pursue my massage therapy certification and that has been the best decision of my life I absolutely love my career.
Over the last 15 years I have taught Massage Therapy, Recruited & Trained Therapist for many companies in the Virginia & Texas area. I currently specialize in Medical & Rehabilitation Massage and educating clients on the benefits of massage as part of their everyday wellness routine. I take pride in seeing my clients regain a quality of life that has otherwise unattainable. The heart of my practice is my clients who see visible & measurable results. I work with Athlete’s, Children, Persons with Disabilities and many more.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I could have been a statistic; I have lived through child abuse, teen parentage, domestic violence and being a single parent. I feel Like we all have a story of trauma & resilience it is what you do with the trauma that strengthens you. While I don”t live in the past I have allowed myself to share my past and my experiences with others to allow them the space to begin to heal in their own journey. I am 50yrs old and quite frankly my life journey is a testament to who I am today and why I pour so much of myself into my clients and those I come into contact with. God has blessed me with a gift to not only assist in healing the physical body but also the emotional & mental body. I take pride in my career and profession I am honored when my clients credit their health and healing process to Reformation Massage & Bodywork.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Absolutely! I wish this had been my first career. You know being a teen parent you take jobs to get by to support your family. I wasted so much of my life on dead in jobs just to get by. Now I am enjoying my life as a Master Massage Therapist. If I can help one I have been truly successful in my life & career.
