We recently connected with Asher Greene and have shared our conversation below.
Asher, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best investment that I’ve made as a business owner is believing in myself and committing my time and energy to my career. As a freelance photographer there is not a guarantee when you get bookings. I have had periods of time where I’ve been fully booked with projects and times where I didn’t receive any inquiries at all. I have a philosophy that everything in life has rhythm, “What comes up must come down” and the ability to be at peace with that rhythm is what helps you ultimately succeed. During slow periods where I didn’t receive bookings I invested in my business by utilizing my time to earn new photography techniques and reviewing old photoshoots to learn from them for future work. I spent my own money to book studio time to learn how to shoot with strobe lights. In 2022 I spent money to rent out camera equipment and my time to photograph high school football games even though I wasn’t paid to be there. At the end of the season I gained confidence in my skills as a sports photographer and had a solid portfolio to send to future clients. The ultimate lesson that I learned is that sometimes you have to bet on yourself to reach your end goal. It’s a lesson that I am still learning today and am excited for what’s in store for me in the future!
Asher, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Asher Greene and I am a freelance photographer located in the Atlanta area. I specialize in sports, portrait, and editorial photography. I started my career photographing high school football in Dekalb County. Eventually I was blessed to be hired as a freelance photographer for the College Park Skyhawks in the NBA G-League. Since then I have worked with clients in the NBA, WNBA, MLS, and NCAA. I currently offer my services as a sports and portrait photographer. I cover media days and sporting events along with portrait sessions including personal and branding photoshoots. I exist to transform my clients ideas into reality. I believe my versatility sets me apart from others in my industry. I do not believe in fitting into one niche and therefore I have experience in many different photography settings. I am most proud of everything that I’ve accomplished so far in my career. I didn’t start Asher Greene Photo originally as a business but rather as an outlet to express my creativity. I’m thankful to be where I am today to where I can say I own a successful business. To any future clients I would like to say that I am excited to begin working with you and cannot wait to see what we accomplish together!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media by posting my work. We are currently in an age where there is no excuse to where your brand and work should not be everywhere possible. I post on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Gondola, Behance, and I’m sure there’s more. The point is the more people that see your work are more potential clients and connections that can help you advance in the industry. I constantly reshare my work on all of my social platforms. Wether it be from a week ago or a year ago, I am beyond proud of my work and all it takes is 1 person to see your content and believe in your vision. My advice to creatives starting out would be to be proud of your work and sharing it with the world. Everyone will not resonate with your vision. Art is subjective and by sharing your work the right people will see it.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the journey honestly, being able to see my growth from where I was a month ago or a year ago makes me proud because I know everything that it took to get where I am today. My journey consisted of late nights, doubt, and sacrifices and I’m proud my past self had the foresight to keep pursuing this dream. There’s a quote that says “If you enjoy your career, you’ll never work a day in your life”. That quote exemplifies how I feel about photography, I never look at a booking as a job that I dread going to. Any time that I am able to wake up and express my creativity I’m joyful, to manifest my clients vision into reality and share my creativity with the world. Most of all I get to create art that I am proud of
