We were lucky to catch up with Ashakia Morgan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashakia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Morgan’s Naturals is a small business that sells inclusive natural hair growth products for all hair types. Morgan’s Naturals goal is to distribute high-quality hair growth products for women, men, teens, and small children across demographics and the globe. The uniqueness of Morgan’s Naturals products is, both items were formulated after experiencing hair loss due to postpartum or medical conditions that cause hair loss, with the lack of natural hair growth products on the market shelves to help bring back the hair’s optimal health, making hair stronger, softer, and longer for all. With natural ingredients with the perfect amounts of vitamins, antioxidants and healing components, Morgan’s Naturals products are used to revive the hair’s health, while thickening and strengthening hair strand, preventing breakage and reducing hair loss, thus, enhancing hair quality and regaining hair confidence.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After giving birth to my now 5 year old son, my hair thinned quickly and broke off unevenly. I didn’t notice it right away, until he was about 6 months and one day, I looked in the mirror and noticed that my edges were very faint and hardly even there. After, I started looking through my hair and notice the middle of my hair was shorter that the rest as well. I went out and bought hair products that claimed to be all “natural”. None of the products worked for my hair, and some made it crunchy and just unmanageable. With raw shea butter and cocoa butter laying around for skin use, I decided to melt the butters and mix them with oils (olive oil and castor oil) and essential oils (peppermint oil and rosemary oil) that prevent breakage and nourishing the scalp.
As a for profit sole proprietorships, it is not always on the top of the mind to give back. Being a black girl with 4c hair growing up in an era where long and straight hair is the “it” hair was not always easy. As a child, no one around me was motivating my hair or self-confidence, because my hair was always left out. However, I grew to love my hair and actually find the best ingredients to improve my hairs’ quality, hair love and has built my self-confidence back because I fell in love with my hair thanks to Morgan’s Naturals. If selected, Morgan’s Naturals wish to partner with local non-profits to help educate young youth and foster youth about the importance of their hair being included in hygiene and self-love. To help those feel good about themselves staring at a young age, can really improve the quality of their life and I am fortunate to have had experience this myself.
Aside from educating the youth, Morgan’s
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source for new clients to Morgan’s Naturals, is word of mouth and farmer markets. I would like to add a hint of social media, but that only reaches the following when shared multiple times. Google ads have worked for me in the past, but as the clicks grew, so did the cost. I noticed that if I go out to events and actually introduce myself to people, then hand them a card, they would purchase for purchase, of someone will purchase within a few days from online. Word of Mouth has been most affected.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to learn was to stop listening to people that don’t have what you want, that don’t work as hard as you, and that complain about how you do something, that they would have done differently, but they can not do it, because they don’t have it. When I first started my business, and sometimes today… I would go to people for their opinions on what I should do or what I need to do, but most of the comments were limited or just plain negative. It was an eyeopener because, these are the people that I have been around and thought knew my best interest. I learned that the best person to have the best intentions and interest in the work you do, is yourself.
