We were lucky to catch up with Asha Torruellas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Asha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
It doesn’t matter what color, shape, size, or creed someone is; always treat people the way you want to be treated. My parents always made sure I knew that.
They also gave me the freedom to pursue whatever I liked, or let me dive into whatever piqued my interest. Because of that I was able to explore different art mediums, fashion, music, etc. and truly be able to express myself throughout my life. As I get older I meet many people who didn’t have the privilege of doing what they wanted or had gotten the opportunity to be their true selves. I’ll always be grateful to my parents for letting me always be myself, and loving and accepting me for who I am.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Throughout my academic career, I always studied art. I mainly did drawing and painting. After I earned my Bachelors in Fine Arts degree from Appalachian State University, I shifted to photography after going on a photo walk with my grandpa in Central Park. After our walk, my grandpa pulled up the photos I had taken that day at the botanical garden and they were so beautiful. Seeing those photos made me want to continue photography as my main medium, and also made me realize how I don’t need inspiration to come to me in order to see a picture or figure out a good composition like I would have to sit down and do with a drawing or painting. The focus I have with my photography is nature. Nature and flowers give me joy and strength. If my photos can do the same for someone else, I feel like that’s the best thing possible and makes me truly happy.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to constantly learn about myself. What I like and dislike. What inspires me. And it’s always exciting to see how my work impacts other people. If I find out my work makes someone’s day, or makes them see the world in a different way, it’s always wonderful.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was born visually impaired. I wouldn’t ever let that stop me from learning anything that seemed interesting though. If something needed precision, I would ask for help or be accommodated for it. I’m happy to say I’ve tried many art mediums throughout my time in school, especially in college. It was always fun to challenge myself creatively. I’ve tried jewelry making, weaving, screen printing, the list goes on…
