We were lucky to catch up with Asha Lipscomb recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Asha , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Truth, I didn’t come up with my company name my grandfather did. I was at his house one day while he was cooking in the kitchen, and he said very nonchalantly “you should name it Acorn’s Bakery”. To truly know me is to know that me an my grandpa are two peas in a pod. He used to call me Acorn when I was a kid so that’s where that part came from. As I was doing research to see what names were available Acorn’s Bakery was already taken. I thought about changing the name all together but having acorn in the name is like having my grandpa with me everyday. So Acorn’s Bake shop was born.
Asha , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been baking since I was 5 when I got my first easy bake oven. I am a self-taught baker and I learned a large amount of what I know from watching hours of YouTube videos and baking shows on the food network. Business started for me when my next door neighbor found out I could bake. She took a chance and asked me to bake her daughters 1st birthday cake. I loved it so much I decided I should start a cake business.
We do birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, baby showers, gender reveals, bridal showers, bachelor & bachelorette parties just to name a few. Our products include specialty cakes, regular cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, pound cake, chocolate-covered strawberries, pupcakes and dessert tables.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I would say the most rewarding aspect of my job is being apart of peoples special day. It’s always nice to meet new people but even better to be apart of their story. I also love getting calls, texts, and sometimes even photos of clients reactions to their custom cakes! Apart from that making my clientes vision come to life is another rewarding part of my job.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Piggybacking from the last question, making a new client know that I understand their vision can be hard. Sometimes there aren’t enough reference pictures for us to sort of meet in the middle. I have a very vivid imagination and when clients tell me what they want,I can never find a photo to match what I see in my head. A lot of times my customers just give me their trust because they have seen my work and know I can bring their dream to life. I have recently found a program that works with Procreate which helps me bring my clients vison, as well as what I see in my head to life. It’s honestly a game changer and I have instagram to thank for it. I find so many useful business solutions on instagram. The IG handle is @cookieandcakeplanner.
