We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ash Patiño. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ash below.
Alright, Ash thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
My team creates and distributes movies and TV shows independently. We have had a lot of success handling independent project. Niche fan bases are what we feed off of. Creating quality streaming content for established influencers and storytellers.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into video production as an 8 year old. I’m 44 now, to put that into perspective. My parents got their first home movie camera and I started that day. I wrote scripts, invited my friends to perform in my films, and edited between two VCR’s it was a different time, but my passion was fully ignited.
Currently the majority of my days are spent creating true crime content. Sourcing stories, aligning subjects, updating the crew, traveling to the shooting locations, which are all over the United States, filming, and weaving the stories in post production. My team usually creates independent content, currently we have three documentaries available on Amazon and we are working on the television show Sword & Scale. All independent content. We work with established influencers to create series and film content.
What sets us apart is the way we think outside the box. After hearing “no” constantly for the first two decades of my career, I found a path to being a filmmaker and artist and a way to make a great living doing creative work. I do not know many other creatives who have been able to bridge creative independent film and series work and make money doing it. My team has broken into this industry and we are albeit risk takers in business, we have made some sound moves that have landed us in a career of traveling, filming, and profiting.
I am most proud of our production and editing team. We are a strong group of seven individuals that are able to make content that keeps you on the edge of your seat, looks as amazing as anything you see on Netflix, and we are able to do this independently. Our most infamous project to date is the Sword & Scale television series, launching in 2024.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
A goal that drives my mission on this creative journey is INDEPENDENCE. I want to create content that speaks to people without a suit leaning over my shoulder making creative decisions. We are the artists and I wanted to bridge these talents with business and after a 25 year journey, I have finally figured out the recipe to success.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy I know of to get your work noticed, is work on it full time. A side hustle is just that a side hustle, most people would and could do the “side hustle” they love full time if they were willing to jump out of the plane and have faith that their parachute will open. A friend said to me 20 years ago as I was bar tending and doing video as a side note “do you really think you would fail, if you quit your job and just focused 40 hours a week on building a clientele. For some reason this statement resinated with me. I had three months of money to live off of, I went in the next day quit my job, and I did just that, from 8AM to 5PM daily I just tried to get clients, within a month I got my first client, after that I just kept building and hustling. If you do not give it your full attention, your side hustle may always remain an unforeseen dream.
