We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ase Card a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ase, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
For me, learning and honing my craft for music was and is life. Mostly learning through experience, living the life I lead has immensely influenced my lyrics and music. I would watch all the music videos growing up on all the networks; BET, MTV, VH1 and all the TV shows that came with it. Studying all genres of sound and keeping an open ear, I found my favorite artists and built myself around it. Eminem, 2pac, Nas and Snoop Dogg being of my immediate influences, I created my own sound and paved my own way to create my career. And having the open ear and mind, I believe, has kept me relevant in the industry as a most essential asset to keep reinventing myself and working with new artists and entities. I never let anything or any obstacles stand in my way of learning what I need to know to grow. Whether it was making my own beats, graphics, etc.. I did a majority of my bookings myself, which caused a lot of stress, time loss and took away from me being an artist fully, so sometimes I do wish I had hired an agent or manager to handle a lot of my business. But nonetheless, it was a great learning experience that shaped me into the man and artist I am today.
Ase, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those who don’t know, I am recording artist from Fairfield -Suisun, California that’s been professionally in the game since the early 2000s but making music since the late 90’s. Based out of the bay area but my sound is worldwide and lyrics are universal. I’ve been in TV, magazines, model runways, live shows, radio and more over the years. I’ve worked with and wrote a lot of underground and a few mainstream artists. Some include Snoop Dogg, Taj-He-Spitz, San Quinn, Sway Calloway, NB Ridaz, Nef The Pharaoh and more. While working with labels Young Black Brotha Records, THIZZ Latin, Jive Records, MTV and the list goes on. Expanding my brand to comedy and SOAP making with the character ‘Poppa Bear’, fashion clothing called “PANASEA”, food cooking by Chef Asey, owning and operating a record label: Soapmuzik Productions and Non-Stop Records, I am an empire in one Man! And with a lot more to offer. I can be found on all social media platforms and music platforms as ‘AseCard’ and I can proudly say I am the only person with that name. Music is my life and my catalog is immense so everyone, everywhere at anytime can enjoy my music.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I feel like everyone should support everyone. Whether local or celebrity. We all need help in this crazy world and we’re all trying to make a living to feed our family and have a future. A lot of things are free, too. Listen, share and support. It’s a big thing in all businesses and aspects of life
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me being an artist, in my opinion, is the ability to transcend all cultures, religions and races. Music is universal and has allowed me to meet and work with amazing people in the world, including travel. Being able to be free artistically, physically and mentally. It’s an amazing feeling that I wouldn’t for the world.
