Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Arvid Choudhury. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
ARVID, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
AMERICAN OTHER A COLLECTION OF 50-a series of mixed media paintings is the first project I worked on as a visual artist. This body of work is important because it found me working the ideas of my identity and place in America as an OTHER. This collection emerged from the constraints of Covid, the constraints of me existing in my skin & is a direct response to the murder of George Floyd. I began operating in mixed media through an exploration of suffocation.

ARVID, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a mixed media artist. From the beginning of my practice the use of materials and implementation of methods as diverse as myself and the America I coexist in have been as important to what I do and how I create. As of late increasingly I find myself using materials and resources that convey my own make up, and feelings. I use turmeric, henna, milk, incense ash I grind myself and the environment to pursue my work. It has been raining a bit, I use the southern rain to structure and shape some of my works.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I work on identity, the landscape of self and the collective selves that make up our environment and communities.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Exploration. Each piece guides the next. I am terrified and excited for mistakes, I step back during the process of creating to understand my steps and methods.
